clio dci 2002 cold starting problem.

  clio dci 2002
Morning Forum

This is my first post here. so hello all :).

I wonder if someone can help/ suggest what to try next. when i go to start my car the pre-heat coil light on dash stays on all the time doesn't go out. When the weather is cool, it was 6degrees this mornnig my car took ages to start. Had to turn over a few times and give it some trottle which gave out a nice cloud of white smoke. When warm start perfect.

I have checked glow plugs getting 0.2ohm with multivolt thing. Also took them out and checked relay was working (not sure how long they need to stay on only tested they glowed for 1/2 secs). I have cleaned egr value and hopefully put it back together correctly. Cleanned tdc sensor (no idea if working or would cause problem), put some injector cleanner in fuel tank. no difference. Taken all fuses out of fuse box side on battery and cleanned them.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try? Somebody have told my to change fuel filter, would this cause the light to stay on, also its in a black plastic box do you just replace lot of does it come out?

Thanks in advance, hopefully can get it sorted without the use of a code reader.

Not sure what else you could really try without knowing what the problem is. That light is an 'electrical fault warning light, so it could really be anything.
You need a code reader to get rid of the light though, doesn't seem go out by itself once the problem's fixed so it might be best trying to just get the codes read on it first of all.

The light actually causes the cold starting issues by putting the car into some sort of limp mode. I believe it sets a default injection pattern due to a lack of info being sent back to the ecu from whatever the problem is (dodgy sensor or stuff like that).

And fuel filter is one part, the whole lot gets replaced.

I'd go to say a injector or some are f**ked.

changed the glows?
EML - is engine management light (looks like a heart monitor in the center )

could be fuel pump starting to go, think that's why mike has asked of its bringing the stop light on after cranking for a while

Get it plugged in on a diagnostic machine,

you could have a few codes,
fuel rail pressure at minimum
glow plug control relay fault
injector ( 1,2,3or 4 ) pulse not active

Morning

Thanks for your replies. All the dash light go out as they should, the stop light goes off when the engine starts. It has always done that so assume that is ok. The lights don't come back on after cranking. just the pre-heat coil light is on all the time.

Im am in the not so sunny county of derbyshire, chesterfield.

I am thinking its gonan have to be plugged in the only thing is i have phoned a few garages up and as its pre 2004 they may not be able to scan it.

i've also been told a clogged/ faulty throttle body could be causing this but im not sure this model actually has one. Can someone confirm?

thanks again

You shouldn't have problems getting codes read, my last Clio was a 51 plate and the codes read fine on that. So long as the garage has good equipment that'll read renault's you'll be fine.

Diesels don't have a throttle body, the accelerator in a diesel just controls how much fuel is injected into the cylinders, not the opening/closing of a throttle body, so it won't be that.

Getting the codes read should point you in the right direction. Could be injector/fuel system problems as people have said, but it could just be something simple as well
