Clio GT

Done a search, nothing came up in the first page and its late, so fark it.

Looking to buy a new car in the next few months and i really fancy one. Was looking to get a 197 but the insurance is just too expensive still, so will have to wait a few years.

Are these any good or is there any other decent similar cars i could go for (zetec s, etc)

Was thinking black, leather and a few choice mods to cure the itch of not having a sport.

Also, post some pics up to convince me :)

Chairs.

Nah, i owned a clio when i joined, 1.2 dynamique and trashed it. I dont own a car the now, missus has a C1 58 plate.

I own a house now can afford a new car and up to about 1000 for insurance, 197 is looking at about 1700, just cant afford it or i would. :/

Depends how much you can afford really.

If its a warm hatch your after then for me its abarth 500, twingo 133 or new shape fiesta zetec s.

If your budget is less then C2 GT/VTS.

s**t driver tbh, as for liking the abarth, 3 of us went to a job at work last week and next to where we were working there was one parked up and we all admitted we wanted one but they were definitely very gay lol

Dont want to spend anymore than 10k, and i reckon biggest engine can be a 1.6. The abarth was too expensive on insurance but the twingo was fine.
The mrs is wanting a C30 but its top of budget and i wouldnt get one unless its the right spec. I like the GT as it isnt that expensive and will do us a year or two until insurance comes down on something better :D

Get a 133 then, cool little cars. Can you get a decent spec C30 for sub £10K? My cousin is after one at the moment for her first car and they are incredibly expensive!

Been debating it, need to go test drive one, just dont know if its big enough. Main reason we are selling the C1 is size. Its gonna be used for her commuting thats why i reckoned the GT would be good. Decent shopping cart.

Are the GT's still 4x100, if so iv got a set of alloys from the meggy that would fit :D

Y dnt u get a second hand car for a couple of years till insurance drops?

Im planning on buying second hand. Im going from a 58 plate car the now we have had since new, wanting something of the same age but larger. The insurance on the gt is around 850, which is decent compared to other cars of the same size engine.

  Stripped yozza'd cup
So just spend a little less on the car to compensate for insurance? 197's can be had for ~£7000 now, that leaves you £3k to play with?

Only a fycking tool would spend that amount on insurance unless they lived with mummy, I could go two holidays with my family for that.

Only an idiot would buy a GT....lol

What do you want to know.

First off, 99% of people on here will tell you not to buy one, and spend the £11.5K on a second hand 182 or something and use the extra on insurance. NO thanks!

I didnt want a 5 year old car, and even if i did, i wouldnt want to pay £1200 for insurance. £800 is bad enough this year on my GT.

In fact it seems people already have.

Its no Clio Renaultsport (sorry, those are s**t too - its a f**king clio)
Engine is all revs, very little torque. Gets better once broken in but it is at the end of the day its a a 1.6.
They do shift if you make them and ive had a lot of fun in mine. Mines now on Coilovers and its quite fun to drive.
B roads are a f**king hoot.

Well equiped as a standard car. If you want a new car but dont want a Clio sport, and only want a run around, and dont expect the world from it, GT is a good option. Just remember that. Dont expect good brakes and steering rack. the gear box is from a clio 197 too which means its utter s**t, and the rack i believe is the same as the dynamique, which means its s**t.

Go test drive one. If youve got any questions, ask. I will try provide non biased answers, sensible answers. If you look through my threads youll find photos of mine dotted about.

Im glad I got the GT, as its enabled me to save up each month towards a new car in about 2 years, and still enjoy a few luxuries throughout my student life. A 197 would skint me, and im trying to think long term.

Im hoping the Meg 250 or Focus RS will drop to £15k ish, and ill buy a 2nd hand one of those - I live in hope......

Heres a pic, still deciding on front spacers. Have 20mm to go on the front, but im not sure.

ignore that ^^^ if you buy a gt you will forever be thinkning 'wish i had got a 197'

the gt is the most gutless engine renault make, i think i would rather have the twingo 1.2.

you can get a 2nd hand 197 for about 7-8k in decent shape and you were prepared to spend 10k so buy a 197 for 7k and then 1600 for insurance and you will still have change.

RS Twingo.

An infinitely more fun car than the Clio GT, whilst using the same basic engine.

Depends what you want though, the Twingo doesn't 'do' cruising, or anything relaxing.

I love swift sports but the mrs doesnt :( Twingo i think is gonna be too small, we need something bigger. The car is essentially gonna be for her commuting 16 miles round trip every day.

Cant f*cking wait to get rid of mine, just no power too it at all. But when i went to buy it i looked at a ultra red 197 for £10k, but couldnt afford that, but when i went to pick the GT up it was down to £8k which i could have easily afforded even with insurance . Only had mine 6 months into a 3 year hire purchase, then going to a storm grey 200, my mum is having the clio haha!

The 133 is surprisingly big inside, plus the rear seats slide and fold flat for those trips to IKEA.

Think of resale you scottish pikey.

A CLio GT has a very narrow market. Buy a 5 door Clio dci dynamique. when you've finished with it, advertise it on friday, sell it on saturday.

You can buy my Clio if you want. Much better value than a GT.

I thought you were liking the GT? This is why I didn't get a 1.2 TCE Dynamique S when they first come out. Went and test drove one etc then decided whilst being slightly faster and a nicer car than my 1.2 16v MK2 at the time, it was never going to be the RS Clio I wanted so waited a year.

The GT is a good all rounder though, nice interior etc. Storm Grey 200 though, epic. Fancy one myself after the 5.

I love it, its got everything that i want in a car just no power, maybe it needs wearing in a little more. Just if you havent got the rev's the car doesnt seem to pull anywhere. Im gonna try and pay the clio off within the next year then get a sorm grey, with everything on it, should be amazing!

No, dont ignore that. Its exactly what it is. Ive run one for a year and i regularly drive cars with far more power than a f**king 197, i know what good engines feel like. I think im allowed to post an opinion?

I thought i said all revs no torque....? I dont get in it and think I wish i had a 197.

From the sounds of this thread though i REALLY think that you WOULD wish you got a quicker car with more sports bits and bobs i.e. suspension etc!! Dont settle for less than you can. There is NOTHING wrong with buying a car thats five years old...nothing at all if you do your homework and read up on what to look for.

Your opinion is pretty pointless and shoiuld really be ignored as it seems you are very bitter towards the 197?!? Maybe you regret not having one. Dont settle for second best always aim for the best you can get. The last thing you want yo do is buy something then regret it 6 months down the line. I have driven a GT and it was a bit of a joke. Nice inside but not really a GT.

On the other hand if it just to fill a gap for a couple of years what about a Fiat Panda 100???

Don't buy the GT.

That's a bad move to get an expensive 1.6 and be bored in 12 months once the novelty has worn off.

So much varied choice out there in that bracket I wouldn't even know where to start.

I do like the GT's I just know how this story will go.

You must have really big, hairy nuts. Well done.

But why are you so angry all the time? I've read a few of your posts as you seem to be a bit more active of late and you just want to argue with everyone about anything. Has your Mum left your Dad or something?

Im curious to know what cars you have access to if you "regularly drive cars with more power than a 197?"

I'd have a Fiesta Zetec S all day over a Clio GT. Looks miles better and you've got the option of Mountune tuning on the petrol should you end up wanting a bit more power

Sorry I apologise, its very irritating/frustrating (actually gutting at times) having people slate your own car all the time, and then having people tell you your opinion is invalid because you dont own a 197. Its like ive bought the most s**t car available. I really do like it and Ive enjoyed driving it at times, is that a crime? I also have it on coilovers now, which made a ton of difference (IN MY OPINION).

I wanted a 197 at one point, Ive driven a 197 too and didnt think much too it if I'm honest. Better than a GT - obviously. More expensive to run. Yes. I wouldnt have spent as much as it was going to cost me running it anyway. I wouldnt have any money in my savings account put it that way - I did the maths.

It is gutless, I never said it wasnt, its actually quite frustrating at times Ill admit, it doesnt really do much until 4000rpm and anything after is also a joke, all I said was that when you rev it to kingdom come it will move. The steering rack can also be frustrating at times too especially switching between BMW's and the GT. Gearbox is horrible and the clutch is quite frankly s**t. Driving position is dire. I can go on.........Still I like it.

Dont buy a GT - Unless you don't expect anything from it and want somehting cheaper to run than an RS. Its also well equiped as standard. Just doesn't have anything going for it engine, handling, chassis, steering rack, box and clutch wise. It is what it is. I'm sure I mentioned that. You also get this sort of s**t from forum members all the time.

On a side note, go look at a Zetec S (I didnt like the interior), Panda (It was a Fiat, but a cool car non the less) and some others im sure there are more.......
