clio mk1 breakdown

hopefully someone can help me! i was driving home earlier and my clio started to slow down then eventually to a stop. it brokedown in the middle of the tay road bridge which wasnt handy. still cant get it started, its definately not the battery or the obvious petrol. its like there is not enough compression or something or there is a dodgy connection that isnt sparking does anyone have any ideas?

this car is in mint condition and has never had any problems or any garage work done to it so its a bit annoying the fact that it just happened.

I hope its not your cambelt too. The engine will still turn if its snapped, but it wont start. Especially if its a MK1 and hasnt had any garage work - has it never had a cambelt then?

headgasket possibly ? like you said could be no compression or might be an issue with plugs/leads or rotor/dizzy cap. if the cambelt had gone i think you would have known about it tbh. was the temp gauge high when the car cut out ?

sounds more ignition related then. im trying to remember if the cambelt has a cover on it on that engine, might be worth having a look to see if its snapped 1st, then have a look at the leads etc basically try all the obvious stuff 1st , dodgy altenator or earth wire can sometimes cause the car to cut out with no prior warning too

well on any other car if the cambelt had gone the valves would go down and the pistons would come up then they would meet in the middle and there would be a crunch then a bang

that all depends on engine speed/crank position. ive seen some cars have the cambelt go and result in every single valve bent all over the place and others where they have come out unscathed or possible just one or two slightly bent. it varies so much you cant say for definate.

if it is the cam belt surely there would be a noise off the chain that drives the crank shaft. there is no unusual noises or anything

 what chain? the crank is driven by the pistons being forced down the bores and the cam is driven off the belt thats attatched to the crank pulley at the other end
