Clio performance compared to others

I was all over an Imprezza at Castle Combe the last time I was on track, was going to pass him up Avon Rise but I over cooked it into Camp and span (my fault as I lost concentration when an Evo cut me up into the no-overtaking zone). Think my step dad was going past S4's on track and then Type R's wjo thought they were all it.

The only car I have had a play with off the lights and came away with my tail between my legs was a BMW 535d, and I knew before I started I was going to get mugged, I have no idea what I was thinking!
It's all about chasing the other hot hatches and then showing them who is boss when it gets twisty.

Round here there aren't many twisties so the traffic light grand prix is the only chance to have some fun. With the 172 weighing so little, with a good start you should be able to beat a good chunk of cars out there. Just make sure you let the other guy know by looking straight at him. When I had my 1.1 with a blowing exhaust, I would often rev it on purpose to instigate a race between the two cars at the front of the lights. Was always a good laugh

  172 Cup
Re the comment on the RS Tuner raising idle - what does it idle at with and without it?

I recently got a 172 Cup and was wondering if its been done already. The car picks up quick at low revs, is a little flat between 3-4k and then has the kick at 5k.

Every clio ive had done has removed the 5k kick. The cup hasnt got the kick but hasnt been mapped.

Because French.

Also my idle speed on the cup is around 1100 cold, drops to 9 ish when warm. My monaco also idles at over 1k, has been mapped but unsure by what. Revs higher than the cup and has zero cold start issues. In fact its bordering frikin annoying in the cup sometimes.

But law of percentages from the time i've been around clios , if the kick is gone it's been mapped.

Yea its weird. I did mine myself idles perfect, higher rev limit but kick still there.. heard a few people with this also.

Ive had a play with a 535d from 70 to 120. Nothing in it.. side by side. And he was definitly trying. He told me at the next services when i pulled in for a burger haha
Off the lights id expect to lose aswell. Think there a second quicker to 60..

A Mondeo Zetec TDCi will own any clio on a motorway.
Any MX-5 on "da twistiezeze" will gap a Clio
between traffic lights, from Halfords to McD's, a Type R would just edge it.

But, for an all-rounder that will beat most things, most of the time, a 172 is a good shout.... it's just not the unbeatable holy grail that many will have you believe

The bmw should have easily won.

Yup. I was going to elobarate but couldn't be bothered. In a nutshell a 535d would own a clio, easily.

The only way it wouldn't if the driver was asleep

  Clio Cup
I had to leave a well known Clio owners group on Facebook because
i was sick of the "had a play with" posts and the relative shite spoken about how "quick" a clio is

I f you need to know - They are the fastest car in the world

Very similar bhp/ton.
I just posted up my experience with one. Your experience/opinion may differ.

Anyway.

I had an ep3 for six months, few subtle mods and went well enough. At a trackday at Oulton there was no difference in times really.

The only two differences i found were, fuel consumption and fun of which the clio beats the civic hands down

My Clio is faster than a generic, mid-size, diesel saloon. Honest.
No really, it is. Because it's got a sport badge on it. IT IS ALRIGHT!
IT JUST IS!

riiiiiight.
Wanna try a 30-70 time for those? Or anything else that actually counts in the real?

This. I've had my ass handed to me a couple of times by similar bhp diesels but with twice the pulling power! PASSAT Tdi was the biggest surprise 170bhp. f**k knows how much torque

I was merely quoting a famous saying of Smokey Yunick.
Handling, braking and engine driveability, ie the torque curve , are vital factors, and weight plays its part in the handling and braking as well as in accelaration,

I have owned and driven a lot of fwd hit hatches.
There are three that will always stand out for me.
Clio RS
306 gti/rallye
205 gti
It's not about how fast they go, it's about how they communicate with the driver. The steering wriggles and jiggles and let's you read the road as if it was braille.
All three share the same trait if having a pointy front end and a balanced throttle adjustable chassis.
Civics engine is a hoot, but out the box the chassis is division 1 compared to premier league hitters I mentioned above.

Wrong, it's a combination of both. A tractor has huge torque but no power. A honda has plenty of power but no torque. Neither wins many races.

Clio is definitely embarassingly slow at times though.

There's a video of me doing a trackday at zanvoort in my ph1. It's like a karma of embarrassment. I come up to a modified 330D on the straight. I get smoked. We hit the braking zone and suddenly the Clio makes a lot of sense.
