Clio problem diagnoised

Right I took it to a mate at Justyres they jacked it up and checked all the wheels for me turns out it's not the wheel bearings after all the noise I'm getting is because my track rods are knackard.

Didn't really take it all in I was more intrested in the price but he said something about metal on metal etc..

Got a quote from a garage can do both sides for about £80 + VAT is that a decent price you reckon?

Well my track rod ends cost me a tenner a side and only took about half an hour each to fit so judge it by that.

Bout right then mate they want to charge an hours labour and track rods at £20 each.

You reckon that will solve the problem, I get a deep humming sound when I turn the wheel to the left at any amount over 20mph

That £80 includes full balancing and tracking quoted £28 for that seperatly so I suppose it aint that bad.

You know what you got me thinking now lol, what if the guy said my track rod ends are shot and not the track rods, I'm pretty sure he did say track rods tho.

Would worn track rod ends give the same symtoms and if the garage order new track rods I assume track rod ends don't come with it?

I may be wrong but if your track rods are knackered then there are some serious issues. I honestly can't see it being the track rods themselves mate as there isn't really much that can 'go' on them.
If the track rod ends are knackered, the rubber boots which cover the knuckle joint will have split meaning the grease will seep out under pressure leaving the metal on metal issue your mate was talking about. If the joints are dry enough, I suppose it could start to get noisy though I have never known them to get that bad.

Okay Len cheers mate what I'll do tommorow then is jack the Clio up, poor bugger been up and down more times than a seesaw the past few days.

If it's the track rod ends - the rubber will have split and will be visable from looking at the car that way, he diagnoised it by fiddling about with it with the steering full lock to the left.

If it's the actual track rods is there anything I can look for which will tell me so?

Okay had a look at them, on the passenger side there is a rubber tube like thing which has split if you put your finger in it it's all greasy.
I told the workshop which was doing it the car needs new track rods would he know I meant track rod ends, if it's very unlikely to be track rods maybe he'd go on instinct?
If he has ordered track rods do the ends come with them too?

AcID, like the man said, it's most likely the joints. I can't see how the actual rest of the part would wear. Why not fix it yourself if the cars going up in the air again? Getting your hands dirty is part of the fun!
