Clio Racing?

  Clio 172
Hello people,

I'm Taz, new to this forum. I live just outside of Cardiff in a place you possibly couldn't read out or even pronounce right.

I'm 28 and have not too long ago acquired a dead clio (Phase 2, year 2003).

It is now stripped, the engine is out and I've bought another. Stripped both engines and re-building a good one out of both while tweaking a few thing here and there.

I think my ambition is to try and get into racing at a novice level first to see how good i am.

I was wondering if any of you knew how I can get into Clio racing and what the rules and regs are, in terms of what can be done to the car, how light, how fast etc.

You're advice and info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You need to pick what series you want to run in there are lots available all with different regs etc. Some examples French trophy, tin tops and team trophy or track day trophy.

There is also a clio only series where the car is pretty much std, run by the 750 motor club if you happen to have a 182.

Perhaps a silly question, but does the fact that I have a 172, limit me from this? Or will I perhaps be able to replace with what makes a 182? Such as manifold and inlet?

On further investigation, if I did decide to try out for MSVT, I'd only get away with 175 bhp per tonne. I therefore won't be looking to have the power I initially thought for.

No afraid not. It has to be a 182 cup or 182 with cup packs.

MSVT is power at the wheels BTW so as std you'd be more like 145 bhp/tonne.

I wouldn't discount the others just on open modifications. Lots of people race in those series with basically std cars, obviously you won't win but you can still have alot of fun.

My advice would be to get yourself a box of stella's and read the Burpspeed thread from beginning to end.

Once you've done that, pop down to the Llandow trackday in August and have a chat to people there. Maybe Tony would give you ten minutes of his time to give you a rundown.

Top bunch of guys going to Llandow too, so you'll have a decent day either way.

If you are chopping and changing heads, pistons etc to get a good engine note the cam covers are matched to the head so can't be swapped.
