Clio Virgin - So many things to consider!

  LOTS!

Hello ClioSport! Nice to be here.

OK, well, Im currently a 106GTi owner and enthusiast, but sadly my 106 has bitten me in the ars* with some kind of ECU fault which Im struggling to have diagnosed. Its amazing how quickly you can fall out of love with a car isnt it! :)

So - Ive decided to fix her up and sell her. Hoping to get £3500 for it and can potentially get about the same amount again so Ive got £7000k with which to get myself a tidy 2nd hand 172.

A few questions then... is 7k enough to get something good? Im thinking mk2 with not more than 40k on the clock? Too ambitious?

Next question, will it be a let down after my 106? I know youre biased but I can tell youre all pretty clued up and honest too!

Finally, got any advise for a clio virgin about to buy?

Welcome, my Mk1 172 is for sale. Have a look in the Cars For Sale thread. X reg, 36k, going to have 36k service and cambelt done in next week. Lowered on Apex -40mm springs, cat back Powerflow and 17" Super Leggeras, PM me if youre interested.

Cheers!

I also heard mention of places doing 4yrs interest free finance on new 182s... where do I go to check out that deal?

Welcome :)

The 106 is a great little car - I had a Quiksilver before getting my 182.

The Clio is quite different from the 106 - not only is it much quicker, it is just an all-round more modern car. So a 2nd hand 172 would probably be a good choice for you.

  106 GTi

Welcome, I have grown up with Pugs 309, 205 and 306, and test drove a 106 Gti and Rallye a few years back. The 172 is much more akin to the cars Peugeot used to build. Good Choice.

Welcome,
my mate had a 106gti & it developed a problem with the ecu, the car just kept cutting out for no reason, peugoet dignosed the problem, however it had to have a new one. Which was covered under warranty.

Your a friendly bunch arent you! :D

Thanks for all the welcomes. As soon as I can get signed up for membership you can consider me officially on board.

Just been to Renault in Banbury to look at 182s and finance. Wow - expensive monthly payments. Cheap overall price though for what your getting. Think Ill stick to the idea of a 2nd hand 172!

Problem is selling the pug - need to shift that so Ive got the funds to buy the new car. Waiting always seems to be the hardest part eh. Feeling fairly confident though that Im making a good decision here. The pug is great but I suspect the Clio will be better!

alrite mate i just bought a mark 1 clio 172 x reg which is a 2001 i looked for two weeks to find exactly what i was lookign for i managed to find mine which only has 24,000 miles one owner and full service history. i have just payed 7k for it and i couldnt be happy its an awesome motor, just find out what exactly you want mate and search for it dont settle for what you first see.

That is sound advice - youu sund well happy as well! Hope Ill be as happy as you are! Sounds also like you bought the car I want - ybugger!

Ill keep looking. Seen a few possibles on Autotrader but until i sell the pug my hands are tied - this is painful!

lol cheers mate if you live in the west yorkshire area i might be able to point you in the right direction for one if not autotrader is a good start but you get dodgy ones. i.e. the first 172 i test drove was a mk2 for 7.5k 30,000 miles on it but it had two clocks on it the guy selling it at the garage was trying to tell me the clock broke n they had to put a new clock in so thats why the current clock showed 4000 miles but there was a clock in the boot which he claimed had 26000 miles on it, the front of the car had many scratches and looked a slightly different shade of colour to the original i didnt trust it at all. but i found the one i was after perfect condition, just keep looking mate :)

I bought a Ph2 172 just over 2 months ago. I try to buy and sell my cars via owners forums and the 172 was a great buy - I paid £7,800 for one on 19k with a history I can trust.

Id say that £7k is the bottom of the price range for a Ph2 - you will find one, but it may not be the best out there. Buying 2nd hand privately is much less of a hassle these days due to the 3-year warranty - a dilligent owner will have had any niggles fixed. Still, its worth trying to find one thats under 3 years old.

It turns out that despite what some (including me) thought in the early days, a 172 Cup will cost noticeably less than a 172 of the same age.

My 172 is lovely. It was my first new-ish car (look at profile for my old ones) and its been worth the investment. I do have a strange longing to have a niggle to fix on Sunday mornings in some respects, but its hardly a bad thing! The handling and speed are very similar to my 16V and Williams were - and I think the amount of time people spend discussing this is wasted because theyre so close.

The 106 GTi (from my experience) would feel only a little slower than the 172, but youd really appreciate the space and - oddly enough - quality of the Clio. The handling is also more progressive and doesnt tend to "bite" like the 106 does (tail happy).

Good luck!
