Problem: the washer pump was misbehaving. Basically both when the front or back washer is operated, only the back one pumps water...
Solution: from this and from other fora, the problem seems to be because of the stuck valve in the washer pump in one or the other position. The solution is to empty the washer liquid reservoir and then fill it with hot water and operate the pump... this worked for me. in fact the front washer started working when the reservoir was almost empty... basically the valve must have got unstuck when the liquid is almost empty... then filling with hot water and operating the pump quickly cleaned the valve and then it is now back and working well again...
