Turning it into a decent replica will cost you the same as it would to buy one.

Complete waste of money imo.

interior: £400
Wheels & Tyres £250
Suspension & Spacers £250
Paint £500
Body panels (wings, bumpers, spoiler, skirts) £6/700

Thats £2000!! You can buy one for £2000!

but i cant insure it as im 17 lol
not guna bother with interior
just bodypanels, euroing it will cost around the same amount
colourcoding(400)
wheels(500)
susp(450)

i want to make it into a long running project eventullly ending in a engine conversion etc

if its guna be a project u need to decide what u want out of a car, style? power? etc.. i would save your pennys up till u know what u really want

style, no point in blowing it all on the engine as its a 1.2!
looks like im going to be hoarding 172 panels after payday!

hmmm ok after thinking about it i think im going to "rat" it for abit untill i get more mulla, i.e. slammed on coilies, running steels with a nice old roofrack hoodride style

Do it in pieces, thats what I did, buying the parts that will look good at each stage.. if you get me..? :S

I only had the kit on 3 weeks and a cup was for sale at my local reno and traded it in :(

I miss it..and dont know where it is now!

I really wouldn't try to make a 172 replica, to me it's a complete waste of cash.

Personally i'd save up (put a bit away each week etc) till I had the money to be able to do some nice mods - like Kris has just said.

I'd go with subtle bits that you can remove from it when you come to sell up (put the car back to standard & sell the mods separately)

One of my biggest regrets..

my advice is dont bother doing anything to it run up your no claims on it and save your money then buy a 172 a proper one
because face it you are going to blow 2k on a car that aint worth 2k

yea, it seems like a good idea but when you think about it its not!

thanks for help!

just guna slam it on nice whees i think

do what you feel is right for you! i mean if you want a look a like go for it but... imo u might as well get the real deal. as the traffic light sprint can be embarassing!!! been there when my vtr looked like the vts.

guess the thing is cost as always but i cant help thinking that for the same dollar as the 172 bits u can make something that looks really special and unique! maybe even better looking than a 172. that will take the focus off the performance and put it on you and the style of the car! then you wont have feel like you have to compete! and the running costs stay low. at the end of the day its your choice! theres loads of options open! and if shes a long term project anything engine wise is possible!

each to their own i say.

why dont you just buy the parts over a period of time, when borwsing ebay you see some wings buy them, and keep them till you got everything, then buy the time its come to putting it all together you have some money then to do it :)

thats my plan :) as i have to keep the car for 4 years :( :)

dont put coilovers on it if your going to 2.0 it as u need new coilovers to run that engine! just stick springs on it and then 2.0 coilovers along with the hubs and brakes etc when you convert it.
