ClioSport 182 EML flashing issue

Afternoon guys, ive read up a few topics just want to see if theres any other suggestions..

When out for a spirited drive or even after a few motorway miles the EML in the bottom right hand corner starts flashing. Im hoping its stored a code so i can check tomorrow at work but some times it does it for upto 10 seconds then goes off and today it did it until i turned the car off and hasnt come on since?

Also to note, its always stunk of fuel when hooning but also the back end of the car is covered in soot almost as bad as a tdi

So do i just get a new set of injectors or do a diy flow test and see if any are failing and replace them ones?

Got cadwell coming up soon and cba wasting a day for something as minor as this. Ive tonnes of invoices for parts replaced but none for injectors. Cars done 112k

Still cant add pics to show the back end but its like black dots all over

Plug it in and check lambda sensor. Mine ran rich and stank of fuel, didn’t throw a light but lambda was a bit lazy and changing it transformed the car. Make sure you only fit genuine Bosch ones. I personally think it would be worth changing injectors also.

all injectors read between 15-15.5ohm..
coilpack was loose for some reason bolted to the inlet, could this cause an earthing issue to that? tightened it regardless.

had another read through reciepts last night and it had a full set of injectors in 2016,

Alright Kieran! Back in a Clio then.

Flashing EML is 99% always an injector.
yeah mate, got a clio for a cheap track car but they never are, typical french cars lol.
still got an M3, id just rather track a clio for the consumable cost difference.

Running a decat? I wouldnt worry about the 2nd lambda issue.


yeah decat, im sure its mapped as its never flagged up eml like usual,

just guessing its gunna be trail and error cause it doesnt actually cause any running issue, ill start with spark plugs first.

although i will do a diy flow test tonight and see if theres any difference in flow from the injectors.

Sorry to hijack the thread but looking to put a decat on my 172. From what I have found so far is you tie the second downstream lambda sensor so it's got fresh air. Do you need to get the ECU mapped after fitting the decat?

Tie it up, and no you dont.

To update this, so far changed spark plugs and all 4 injectors prior to doing cadwell, got to leeds from preston on the M62 and the EML started flashing again, this was sat on cruise at 70mph

Wasnt going to let it stop me and ruin the day as it wasnt losing power / missfiring.

Car got a good thrashing all morning and a good long afternoon stint and then it started flashing while on track.

Decided not to risk it, so called it a day about 2:30-3pm.

Car drove home perfectly fine, then started flashing about 3/4 of the way home in like 10 second bursts. Still runs fine.

Done a scan, got the same missfire code even though its not missing.

Next port of call i think will be a new secondary lambda with a 90 degree spacer as im wondering if its the emmisions triggering it?

Anyone any advice or does this sound feasible

The symptoms I had above were the same when it turned out to be the upstream oxygen sensor that had packed in.

Occasional EML - no obvious issues with performance, stunk of fuel and tailpipes that looked like a VAG diesel test.

Got it swapped and all was good.

Post cat lambda fault due to decat usually puts the eml on solid. A 90deg spacer stops it from flagging up all the time however will come on occasionally.

Id be checking the live data on upstream lambda and check the connections for corrosion.

You could swap downstream lambda to upstream to see if any difference.

Downstream lambda doesn't usually cause those issues, the primary one does tho.

You can swap the two lambda's around, see if it improves anything.

Chuck a 90deg fitting on the downstream lambda and fit it in the decat, will keep the eml off most of the time.

So do you still put the lambda in with the 90degree? Assuming with the engine running and gas flowing it doesn’t read the richness as well at 90degree as it would if it was in the direct stream?

I’ve gotten an eBay plug at the moment as that seemed the most common answer

Exactly that. But it makes no difference either way due to the postcat not having any effect on fueling.

good morning guys, to keep this updated ive changed a few more bits and still no change, before i get any ''take it to a specialist'' im not too bothered its a trackcar so its just consumables that will no doubt need changing anyway in the future..

tried the lambda swap, car ran horrendous, so i swapped both lambdas for Bosch items. still no change.
HT Leads were next, i found one was trapped under the inlet (probably me when i did plugs). still no change.
Coilpack was next, took a bit longer but after a day or two the light again started flashing at 70/80mph

to note - the light wont flash at normal town road speeds, it literally starts at 70mph and its not constant.

sooo.. what do i try next, i want this sorting before i get the timing done or could the timing be an issue? car goes really well and ive done 2 full trackdays at cadwell trouble free. so im doubting its not timed up right. ive read online could be the crank sensor dirty?

Thinking this is the only thing it can be tbh. Im gunna check the crank sensor as ive been told the terminal could be rusty.
Every specialist ive asked so far has said one of the components ive already changed… need to find someone who has clip, hopefully this will be a bit more informative than my diagnostic machine at work.

Mine done it in kangoo conversion was because of the original pedal being kangoo and not clio the pedal position used to go from 7%-85% and jump around when held strait by just a few % but made it do this too, maybe check pedal signal is steady when held at different %’s or check all engine loom plugs some go green fast
