Clutch feel

  BG DCI
What is the standard 172 clutch meant to feel like.

Mine is very stiff and the bite point is really high and sharp.

Is this normal or does this indicate as i thought that the clutch may be on the way out. No other problems with it apart from 1st gear being very hard not to make it jumpy!

Thanks

French cars have high clutches. 1*2 are heavy too. If it has no play at the very top though it might need doing

So did we get an idea haha

It feels very jerky and usually I am ok with driving new cars and getting the feel of them!

Maybe I need another 172 owner to drive mine and see if it's the same!

What's the milage like on a standard clutch. Anyone's packed up at a certain milage or do they keep going strong?!

Thanks

I'll try it when I next see you mate. My old Clio used to feel heavy and have a high biting point, so can compare if you want?

I knew what to expect when I got my 172, stiff with a high bite. However the fact that it feels sharp should be a good sign. It's when the bite feels very woolly and almost not there that you have to worry.

Love the 'meaty' feel of the 172 clutch!

Ok so I guess it being high and stiff is normal. I was under the impression that the clutch was on its way out if the bite got really high but like you said maybe i should be worrying if its got no feel at all.

It is rather on or off though. Likes a lot of revs to be bait smoother, so pulling away from the girlfriends house in the morning quietly usually means stalling a few times! :(

Every 1*2 I've driven has had a heavy clutch.

Un-manageable or just difficult. Have been driving a while now and am still finding it hard to manage pulling away. Feels like my CRX with a hydro conversion on a cable run car. On or Off..

My release bearing gave up at 44k so just changed the lot.

iirc there is a few owners on here well above 120k still on original clutch

The clutch is light on my Ph1 172 compared to the clutch on my previously Mark 1 Clio. I tested a 172 when it was new in 2000 it felt very light at the time. My original clutch lasted 140,000 miles before I got it replaced and did it more out of curiosity (it still had some material left). It had done quite a few airfield sprint events, too.
