Coilovers!

  S2 106 GTI
wanting to get some coilovers but wondering which to go for. I was thinking about the H&R's i know everyone recommends them! its just the cost! lol but curious about other makes too. what other are good out there?

They're worth they extra over the cheaper options, buy cheap buy twice! Once you've commited yourself to £500+ on suspension you'd be a fool not to pay the extra IMO.

FK knoigsports are similar, if your getting em for looks just go for fk highsports at 470 quid, if your going for handling get the HandRs

H and R's are supeb for the money FKs are good and much chepaer but if you can afford the extra H and Rs are worth it.
Leda are arguably better but £1.2k.

just i was looking on the tinterweb and demon tweeks catalogs and theres loads of different ones!! KW, KONI, SPAX,TEIN list is endless! its just the cost of H&R's which is a shock! lol

I use my car for the track and have and FK Konigsports [Adj Koni dampers] and I love the setup - nice and firm, with responsive damping.

I had upgraded Exige LSS Bilstien suspension on my VX and IMO the clio is on par or even exceeds that setup.

IMO of course. HRs are not the only way.

just been havin a look for those FK Konigsports, look rather nice! i want the ride to be firm but not over the top stiffness, still want it to be comfortable! lol

If you can find a couple of members with different kits near you I'd be inclined to ask to go out for a spin, even a passenger ride will give you some sort of comparison.

My car is for the track - but I do go out for blats. I set it to about level 2/3 damping out of 4 on the road... and 4 on track if dry.... 3 if wet.

It is firm... but I have all my cars setup like that [apart from my CTR which i use day to day].

Here it is std at rear and coilovered at the front [the front can go so low you can touch the sump on the floor!] BTW this is when I forst got the 172.

Loads of info here [click on archives]

ha ha thats a serious drop!! can't really go too low cos around where i live there are bumpy roads, speed humps, mates who live on farms and i have to drive down there lane! :(

Bonus! might have a look around and see about some. I would like some H&R but its just the cost which puts me off! lol how much were yours?

Yup ride height can be set to suit where you have to drive the car, just because you have coilovers doesnt mean you have to have them all the way down.

I've not driven a car with FK's on but when I went out as a passenger in Fred's it definately felt alot firmer. I guess it's all down to personal taste/the use the car gets and also what the state of the roads near you are as to which will be the best move.

There expensive because they're good.
Forget Spax and Koni KW are similar to H and R a bit stiffer I think.

Tein are Jap stuff so I don't think they do any CLio stuff plus its going to be a bit stiff for the UK roads.

Yep my understanding is that H&R's are softer than FK Koni's so are a great choice for an everyday car.

My car is not an everyday car [barely gets used!] but when used is done so on track or fast road hence why I want something stiffer than H&R's without paying out for LEDA.

chris, i'm thinking about getting fks, in your opinion are the konigs worth it? i was just gonna get highsports but wanna know if the extras worth it as on my 1.2 they were superb

Mine is on FK Konigs:

Back is as low as it goes (although that ics old and they settled lower now), the front will drop until the tyre is resting completely on the liners.

I find the ride is perfect for me, like Chris I prefer a hard precise ride, to some vague bouncy cruiser so I have mine 3/4 wound for everyday, rebound is good, bodyroll is eliminated and the ride isn't 'crashy'. They give you plenty of feel, not really a bad word to say about them tbh.

Only ballache is inevitably having to fiddle with the height because as they settle, they go lower, then you start scrubbing when booting it, and this time of year unless you have some place warm to work-in it can be a barsteward.

I'd go for Konigs over High's everytime btw, if I know im travelling 150 miles on motoroway it's nice to be able to soften them up, then when you hit the B roads, wind them up and you have weapon for the lanes.

Recommended certainly.

You can fit them yourself, 2 man job ideally, and you'll need them laser tracked and camber/aligned afterwards (£80ish) so factor that into your costs.

I got mine from Rimstyle in the groupbuy for £499.

P.S Whatever you buy, make sure you swear the threads with plenty of Copper Grease, they have a tendancy to seize up with all the salt etc.

Adjustable always - Konigs.

£600 is a bargain if paying full price.

I have no scrubbing with it slammed.... although I am running ultra low profile R16/10/195s

ive got fk konigsport on my mk1, had them for 6 months now and im well impressed with them. i got them setup when i first got them fitted and have'nt touched them since as i think the ride is perfect as it is, kept me on track at cadwell at some speed:D they have'nt been lowered very much tho as the cars running widetrack so gotta be careful about those arch's could go on the floor tho but would'nt be drivable.....

I've got the hisports. Not had it tracked yet but it's much beta! Will be even better soon! Mine VERY low tho! Too low infact!

^^^^ whats the difference between them both??

One has adjustvbale damping personaly I don't see any point in adjustable damping unless your spedning a fortune (£1k+ minimum) and know what your doing as the optimum msetup the one you leave the car on on adjustable stuff is the same as what the fixed stuff is.

Youc an find the adjustable stuff is more dangerous than the fixed stuff if you set it up wrong.

I like to set it softer in the wet than in the dry.

Thats considerable effort chris. And the chassis isn't stiff enough to make a decent effect!

I'm get to try mine on track....So i'll hold my breath and pass judgement.
