Cold Air feeds/Air filters/Induction Kits

  Valver Lookalike Mk1 Ph3

Mk1 ph3 D7F.

Ok the general opinion of induction kits from what Ive read everywhere is that they dont give any power gain whatsoever - true/untrue?

Is there any mod I can make to the air filter (or whatever) to gain any power? Or just do anything positive? Ive seen custom cold air feeds mentioned - sum1 explain where these feed the cold air to and what I need to make 1?

Search for some topics in this forum and also have a look at maybe some other car forums to see what they have to say on them. Just take a while to look through the posts, induction kits/cold air feeds have been mentioned so often in this forum in the past.

From my (somewhat limited) experience, induction kits usually make an engine a bit more throttle-responsive but may only make a good gain with other mods (ie de-cat/exhaust, ecu, manifold work or cams)

They can make a nice sound too... Which I think is half the reason some people buy them in the first place tbh..

Right, a 1.2 engine is never really fgonna get hot enought o effect it.

I had an open one sat on the top of my 1.2 engine and it defo made a difference, i dont car what anyone else says, it made a differnce, but in the 1.8 the engine gets hotter and so it need sot be away fromt eh engine and cool

o the 1.2 you might aswell get an induction kit. go with one of the bigger companies, K&N or piperx wouldnt imagine any power increase though would say it would improve/change the drivabilty of the car. oh and they sound good!

K and N sound great. A lot of guys on here go for the ITG Maxogen kit or typhoon kits which have heat shielding. Do a search

Do they use more fuel?

Heat shielded kits arent available for the mk1 1.2 as far as Im aware.

HillPower may do a half heat shielded kit for the mark 1 1.2/1.4s but Im not sure if thats for your engine type. I didnt notice that you meant the 1.2, if I were you Id get any open induction kit, you may or may not lose or gain power, but to be honest any power gained or lost will be sod all on a 1.2, itll be the noise that makes the biggest difference, and also it will seem more revvier/responsive throttle-wise..

Get a de-cat pipe from Lunner and with an IK you will be sorted... :O)

As for using more fuel, yeah, you draw in more air so the engine will use slightly more fuel, but thats not really anything to worry about now is it ;o)

I had a open Ik on my 1.2 (D7F) and that did suffer from heat loss. it ment i couldnt go above 90mph where as i can do 100mph normally (on track...)

I have recently put a panel filter in mine and tbh i cant notice a difference with it in. though i could of sworn the ik made it feel nippyer when it was cool.

Not being able to do 100mph...no way Im getting an open IK, I enjoy driving fast on big open roads (I dont do it in residential area as I think thats just plain stupid).

As for a decat pipe, can i get some info on this? Simple to fit? Do I need a new exhaust system to go with it? Or will it fit on all types/sizes of exhaust?

On my 1.2 8v, N reg i was running a de-cat, strraight through centre section (as std) and a peco power master back box, and an open K&N.

It very happily did 120 on the motorway, although this was wiht a valver bonnet, it also felt faster after fittng both teh K&N and de-cat, although really didnt notice any difference wiht the valver bonnet.

The 1.2 engine really dosnt get massivly hot, i coul sit in trafgfic fr ages and ages before the fan cut in, ont eh 1.8 its cutting in after a few mins, so once you are moving, provided the cooling system is in decent conditioin, heat really isnt a problem

A de-cat will usually, on an older car, cut your top speed, without a de-cat on my Mark 1 1.4 RT, I could do 120 (on my privvy test track in my back garden of course) but with the de-cat I would struggle to do 110.... But saying this, when are you stupid enough to do over a ton on a public highway!!!?!

A de-cat pipe will however, make your car rev a lot freely, you wont need a new exhaust system to go with it, and you will be able to buy one and have it fitted for under £60 easily.

You will be able to do 100mph with an open IK... Just how long it takes you to get there I dont know!

Lunner: I dont know how your 1.2 did 120, sure it wasnt a 1.4 ;)
I once did 115* and it felt like the engine was at the limit before.. Which is what makes me wonder. but perhaps as yours was a different engine..

Rip3z: I have the same engine as you and i have a decat, Scorpian ss cat back system and a Powerboost valve, when i had it rolling road tested it kicked out 64.1 bhp - 4.1 over standard so unless you got the bits cheap like me, may not be worth it?
I have recently added a panel filter and uped the fueling and it does feel quicker than it did before so not to sure what it is kicking out.
It deffo has alot more low down torque which makes for easier driving.
I didnt notice a real difference with the decat tbh, didnt make my top speed any less. just made the exhaust sound better.
