Colour coding

How easy is it to colour code the plastic bits on an mk3? There's only the door strips, the two bits each side on the back, the strips on the front and the mirror surrounds. Would you attempt to do it yourself? Or would you just pay a bodyshop? Im thinking the bodyshop would be expensive?

Been quoted 150 today to it all apart from the mirror surrounds, the guy said that the bits around the mirror will just brake when he pulls them off, and that nobody has them done, is that true?

I've got a 5dr mk3 and have had everything colour coded, I didn't bother with the mirror surrounds, didn't see the point tbh, cost me £80 for the lot because I know someone in the trade, I did have a go at doing it myself and I wouldn't try again, not only did I do a poor job, the colour match was terrible! Looks so much better though

I wouldn't like to say really, I don't think it's a total rip off but then consider because mine is a 5dr there was a bit more work to do, get a few quotes before you go anywhere, don't know where you or they are based but sprayshack on here seem to get nothing but good feedback

The reason it's costs more is down to the labour involved in smoothing the plastic and preparing it to be painted! As mentioned above Spray Shack in the traders section are always highly praised for their work!

Don't you have to get the parts off and send them to them? I wouldn't know how to get the front and back bits off.

To be honest it all depends on how much you are willing to spend to get a good finish on the items. Some people buy the stuff themselves and do it and it will be a big margin cheaper than if you take it to sprayshack. But sprayshack specialise in it so will most definitely be a better finish on it. Ive found a place near me who are going to do my side strips on my car for £40 and since ive just had my alloys done by them to a great finish ive got no problem in letting them do them

yeah, ive messaged them for a price but i still wouldnt know how to get the front and back inserts off? Any ideas?

with the front and backs you just have to gently ease them off using a screwdriver as a lever.....u will likely break a clip or two but if your careful/take your time you wont encounter too many issue. Its good to have someone helping you as well

But if the clips brake how will I put them back on lol? Or is there a few clips so then it won't matter if a couple brake?

You might snap a couple of clips as mentioned, but you're unlikely to snap them off, I've put mine all back on and they're all fine I used a screwdriver wrapped in a rag/microfibre as to not damage the paint on the car

Exactly what i did mate. The clips are made of quite a soft plastic so they are quite plyable so even if the bend or break, when you put the trim back in, it will still hold in place fine. Like i said, one person pulling the trim and keeping the tension and one with the screwdriver pushing the clips in if you can mate

Yeah possible to do it yourself but the last thing you want to do is slip even with a rag on the screwdriver have to admit my front passenger side one still doesn't sit right from where a neighbour scraped the front end a tiny bit D:
