Ive not bought a clio yet, im looking for a clean 182! l having a read up it looks like engines vary in hp, varying from 150-180hp. My question is how do i know what im buying? if i have a low hp car is it simple stuff to get it up to what it should be? is it something like a clogged EGR or dicky sensor giving the low hp?
Does any of this make sense, or any i talking drivel?!

It's more that different sites have different power listed when the seller types in the reg.

Any clio up to 2005 will be a '172', realistically make 165-170. After 2005 it should be a 182, making 175+

Its more about the casting on the engine blocks when they made them at the factory, some probably flowed better. Luckily its pretty rare you find a knackered one going as low as 150. but if you got one with 165 bhp it wouldnt feel any different or perform any differently to one with 175 bhp. The f4r motors also get better with age so long as they are treated well, so one could be dyno'd at 160 bhp at 30k mls and could end up having 165-170 when it hits 100k mls. dont worry about it

Low BHP can often be linked to bad timing/fuel issues so i think getting a car that has had belts done at a reputable garage is important. Either that or one with no belts, and take it to a specialist yourself
