Connecting laptop to TV via VGA.

So I purchased a VGA cable to plug my laptop in to my TV which works a treat. But obviously being VGA, I have no sound.

What do I need to buy to transmit sound from my laptop to my TV?

I have a cable with the red, yellow and white pins at one end, and the other end which can plug in to my headphone or mic hole in the laptop, but no idea whether this is the right thing to use, whether I need to change certain settings etc.

Any help is appreciated!

That could possibly work, is the red and white audio IN for the VGA or for a seperate scart channel? I use a headphone cable from the laptop into an audio IN port on the front of my surround sound. Streaming movies straight from the net.

Umm not sure?

Basically, the VGA goes from my laptop to the back of the TV. Then I have a seperate cable which is the red and white audio one, which I can plug in to my headphone slot or my mic slot on my laptop, and then plug it direct in to the back of the TV in a seperate place to the VGA cable.

I assume that is the problem, as the audio will be playing on a different output to the VGA image.

Yea, I think the VGA port at the back of the TV doesn't have a red and white audio linked to it. The red and white audios at the back of the TV will be for seperate scart channels. Do you have a HiFi? You could always plug the audio into that, that would work.

I use a single jack plug going from the headphone socket to the input on my surround sound.

Probably a 'no' - but do both devices not have a HDMI connector? Would make things much more straight-foward. :)

D.

Laptop is fairly old now so unfortunately doesn't have an HDMI slot.

Will have to go down the route of connection to hi-fi/surround sound.

Cheers for the help all! :)

This will do the trick:

So checked my TV and sure enough there is a PC Audio In slot, which looks like the same connection as what you would plug a set of headphones in to?

So am I right in thinking I now need a cable with a headphone jack at either end, one to go in the headphone slot on my laptop and one to go in the PC Audio In?
