Conversion for numpties?

How hard is it to do a 2l conversion?
There's always engines popping up on eBay and cheep Donner shells. i know a bit about bikes but cars i know nothing! is it some thing that can be done by a novis in a garage? any online guides or will a Haynes manual give me the basics i need?
