Converting fogs to sidelights?

  Jap Box
Well seeing as the fogs are currently just there doing nothing anyway id like a use from them other than just looks.

Not enough fog to bother to relay them up to be used as fogs really so wouldnt mind having them wired to be used as sidelights, I think other people have done this before?

Or is it simply too much effort to bother with it all?

Thanks

Also illegal and old bill will have a field day... They pull everyone over down here for having there fogs on

You'd be better off converting them to missile launchers. I'd love to see that done, I don't think it's been done on here before either.

Id just like a use from them tbh.

Is it? Plenty of cars have daytime running lights that look like fogs around here :S

Lmao, sounds like a plan

It'll mark you out as being a t**t. I wouldn't bother.

Ha ha, why do people hate them so much? They have never bothered me really, thought popped into my head yesterday when I had some **** tailing me in a saxo with his fogs on.

There's legislation governing the position of fog lights, in relation to the head lights. I was speaking to a traffic officer about it.

Fog lights have to be set outside the vertical of the headlights, where as driving lights are in between the headlights.

the old bill do us up here too. They call them sports lamps haha!

Old bill, "can you turn off your sports lamps for us or we will have to fine you £30 as they dazzle other drivers"
Me " i dont have sports lamps, what are they"
Old bill "Step out your car and come to the front.................................(points to fogs) "them!
Me "ah you mean fog lights"
Old bill "dont get smart and just put them off"

I have always been tempted to drive around with my main beam on and see if i get a fine for that. I rarely use the fogs anyway but i got this off them once

my old 206 had fogs. although clearly stated in manual that they were driving lights. never got done once for them as i showed them the handbook lol

My mates mum got fined £60 a few months back for having hers on in the middle of the day, once asked why they were on she replied with "They make my car look more cool" lmao

Oh right, so I couldnt simply have a really dim bulb in there? Might just laminex them over with the yellow stuff then :)

Is it, if it's a proper conversion?

Yes, and then the car would fail it's mot for having none working fogs, unless u blanket off the switch.

If there's no switch they can't test it.. As I was told by a friendly mot tester. When my fogs didn't work but had the switch. I simply swapped it for a blank so they couldn't test it :)

  Jap Box
Ahh right, was going to say, mines had the fogs there with no bulbs and their not even wired in yet they didnt fail it on the MOT.

If fog lights are fitted and wired up they must work. If a car doesn't have front fog lamps, then it can't fail.

Incorrect.

If you want them to have some use just do what most people do these days and wire them up to your main beam

Front fog lamps are useless - even in fog anyway! :S
You can't really see any more of the road with or without them IMO

And the amount of people driving with them on around here on a sunny day is hideous! :banghead:

Dont see why you want to do this tbh. But why wire them up? Take your side lights out and turn your fogs on lol there you go.

A rear fog lamp is a requirement for the MOT, fronts are not.

My last car didn't have front or rear fogs as standard that never failed and I don't think any standard mk2 punto has failed on it. Fog lights arnt compulsory they wouldn't be a extra if they were its abit like rear window wipers some people think you'll fail for de-wipering your car when it's not some cars don't come with them ethier.

I think the ford S-max (and others) have a low wattage bulb mounted in the fog lamps which are used as a sidelights. They must also have a separate higher wattage bulb for when the lamp needs to be used as a fog lamp...

If your going to wire them up with the standard bulb in then as said before in my eyes you'll be regarded as just another idiot who drives round with their front fogs on all the time.

Not sure how you'd stand legally if you mount in a lower watt bulb and wire it into the side lights..

Just as a side note I think all new cars should have the front/rear fogs on a switch that turns them off when you turn off the car, meaning you need to turn them on every time you start the car. This would render the excuse 'oh sorry officer I forgot to turn them off from them fog we had 6 six weeks ago' useless....

I have got in my clio a few times after fog and not noticed that the fog lights have turned on when i've flicked the lights on, I'm sure the fiesta I had would turn the fogs back to the off position when you turned off the main lights.... Can't quite remember.

I might look at wiring my fogs up to main beam/ Flash - as i think it looks quite cool when cars flash with LOADS of lights lol.

the wife's Fiat 500 turns the fogs off when you turn the engine off as well....

I agree flashing someone with loads of lights does look good, but driving round with your fogs permanently on is not for me...

It is a requirement in the UK MOT that vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1980 have a rear fog lamp (some exemtions apply).

Thats the most annoying thing to possibly do, fog lights beaming behind me in plain dark pisses me off!

Im talking about simply a dim bulb that will purely light up the holders and not much else really so it doesnt annoy anyone and obvious their not the fogs.

if it was me - id go to the scrappys, grab 2 sidelights bulb holders (push in type, same as clio) drill holes the right size in the rear of the fogs, run wires from the sidelights down there, bang! job done.

whilst your at it replace existing sidelights with LEDs, same LEDs in the fogs.

i think it would look good personally, and cheap enough to try, if you dont like it just take the bottom LEDs out again

Got LED bulbs in the sidelights as it is, and I have spare sidelights holders here too so I can always give it a bash :rasp: would it make a difference though cutting into the sidelight bulbs and running another wire down to the fogs?

Could always wire up to the cigarette lighter 12v though and put a switch on the headlight adjuster panel for the extra lights.

i wouldnt bother messing about with switches and what have you, its easiest to just run wiring from the sidelights, it wont do any harm and is a bit more pro-ey imo
