Coughing and spluttering.

  Clio RS Sport
Hi
I have just acquired a 2010 Renault Clio Sport RS 200 with 34000 miles on the clock and as far as I can tell is bog standard with no modifications. I generally only do about 5-6 miles a day commuting to work. The problem I have got, is that the car coughs and splutters and goes down the road like a kangaroo, usually when changing from 2nd to 3rd but does do it in other gears but other times it's fine. It does it most days, but has been known to have a good day when it runs perfectly. It will do the fault in other gears but seems more common when changing to 3rd gear. There is no warning lights on the dashboard or anything to indicate a problem. If you chase it, it doesn't seem to do it either, just when driving normally, as usually get stuck behind slow moving traffic. Have had the spark plugs out and they seem fine. Have also tied down the MAP sensor as described by various other forums but this doesn't seemed to made any difference. There's a popping noise from the exhaust as well, not sure if this is normal.
Anybody got any thoughts?

I don't think we have a Renault dealer anymore. Was hoping for a quick fix as have just had my hours at work cut. Still might have to look into seeing if there's one. We don't have anyone with a rolling road or anything like that.

It seems to do it even when warn although I've only really done short journeys. Might be an idea to do a longer one just to see if it does it then although the temperature guage shows it's up to temperature.

They are prone to play up when cold, are you aware of that?

A lot get them remapped iron out the flat spot, cold start issues.

Take it out for a blast and see what it’s like then.

Yes. I have read that others have had similar symptoms, but wasn't sure if it matched my issues. It certainly goes fine when it's behaving itself, show hopefully normal. I'll take the long way home one day this week see what happens. Thanks

They can be awful on standard map. Funnily enough Chris at efi had one over last week from iom for mapping.

Get it done, transforms them!!!!!

Hi
Yes would like to, have to perhaps make some inquiries see if anyone can do it on the island. Don't think we have a Renault dealer any more, but will see if there's anybody else.

Thanks

Well there might be, I will have to look in the yellow pages etc. I think I have seen one that says he specializes in Renaults so might give him a ring. At the moment I've only really done fairly short runs 5 - 6 miles so going to take a longer route home tonight see if it still does it.

Ha yes, just a bit. Not all of the car repair places have decent websites on the island. Although have found one that does indeed says he is a Renault specialist so might give him a call,
I'll see how it goes on a longer run.

hi
Have done a few longer runs, although it does seem better when warm, it still does cough a bit. Not too bad if driving enthusiastically, but at slower speeds it seems more prone to do it.

The ecu adapts quick on them so when you take it for a long run or bit of a blast the fuel trims adapt a bit and it will be a bit better then low down but not for long though.

Perhaps a lambda sensor issue? My 182 used to be a pig to drive when cold (still not great) and I found it to be a million times better after replacing the Lambda sensors.
