Could I Race My Cup?

  172 cup
Currently putting together a dedicated trackday clio 172 cup :)

As my dad raced many years ago he would like to see me racing at some point as he says after a few track days i will want to race.

Just out of interest, is there a race series for the 1*2? As i know the 197s have replaced them in the clio cup. Just so i know i could always take this as far as i wanted if i were ever interested in entering a race series.

Thanks

To do a season in the clio cup costs a great deal of money,

that said, i'm sure there are other saloon series where a 172 would be eligible.

First point is to take a look at the various series that there are and find the technical regs for them. No point in building a clio that isn't going to be allowed.

I knew someone would bring cost into the answer...but then again it is very important. My dad will help me financially and put some into the project. I could always not just enter the full series and just do a couple of races, simply for the experience.

I need to know the names of such series' that will allow the cup and yes the tech regs would be very important to look at before i modify my clio too much.

There must be some people on here that race??

The dunlop sportmaxx cup would probably be a good way to go, a few Clio's in there. Mark Fish would be able to point you in the right direction, I know he works on at least one car in the championship.

What about Sprints and Hill Climbs? Not quite the same but it'd be a good place to start and most likely a lot cheaper too.

Excellent help. Any links?

Also, is it one of those series' where only drivers with a certain amount of race experience are allowed to enter or are novices allowed to take part?

stock hatch, LMA euro series, Dunlop cup etc etc, there's loads out there

deep pockets required

Also very helpfull and any links would be greatly appreciated.

Roughly how much are we talking for a race weekend?

Always an option.I dont know a great deal about either so any info would be great.

Have you had any time on track at all yet?

So far i have done two oulton park trackdays in my cup but with the car completely standard. Also done a half track day at oulton in my dads caterham when we went on a club trackday (and shared the driving). Plus i have quite a lot of kart experience but to summarise im not that experienced at the moment so would only consider racing when i was very confident in my abilities and when my car was in a descent standard. Im only asking questions now so i can discuss the options with my dad and possibly start racing in the future. ;)

However, just had a look on www.barc.net at the technical specs and they only allow cars that are less than 5 years old. So an 03 at the oldest for 2008 and then it moves up by a year, each year. Thats a c**t.

tell you what, if ure seriously looking to race you wouldnt be asking so many questions on here, theres plenty of info out on the web regarding race series, also if you ring mark fish or search on the net for him instead of asking for a link u might get some where

What an unhelpful response. There is that much info on the net its hard to know where to start. I have searched for info regarding different race championships but it is hard to find series' for a specific car. Now that people have given me the names of race series' i can go from there and reasearch each one as i am currently doing.

So instead of providing unhelpful crap, keep your mouth shut.

Don't waste your cash building a car to begin with.

There are plenty of race car owners/teams out there who can offer you a chance to race well sorted race cars.
Just look for "drives available" in the motorsport press.

Obviously at a cost but that's racing for you.

Having and making contacts helps a lot, some of my friends race, I know this helped them to start with.

Best bet for detailed info is to contact mark. His number is 01279 431628.

Extremely helpful chap, always willing to chat about your needs over the phone. What he doesnt know about prepping track cars isnt worth knowing.

Runs a number of cars in various race series, and has set-up most of the best track clio's on here in some aspect.

Should be able to get you started mate.

Start there, plenty of info.

I've joined one local club recently and am going to join another - plenty of opportunity weith either of them to get a few sprints/hill climbs in during the year.

They do autotesting regularly too so I might venture out in the Cup.

Thanks for most peoples help. Having looked at the technical information for both the dunlop series and the LMA euro series (couldnt find much on the stock hatch), it seems to me that the dunlop series seems a better way to go as the modifying rules are very strict ,unlike the LMA series, therefore helping to keep costs down (yes i know its still not going to be cheap).

The cars also seem to be grouped in terms of BHP/tonne which seems a fairer way of doing things rather than being unrestricted on the mods people can do. It seems like suspension, exhaust (not inc mani), and ECU map can be changed but the rest must remain standard. Not sure about brakes though.

what is the general budget per season excluding building the car?

I would figure that it would be around the £1500 mark per race if you take everything into account plus damage money so £11k for a season?

I suppose in total (inc car) the 172 will cost you the best part of 8 - 10k if you can do the work your self and arent restricted by strict regs?

Therefore in your first year you'll be looking to drop 20k?

Wow......wish i could do that!

The clios that run in the LMA Mark Fish Motorsport Clio cup are all ex-championship cars, (apart from the 197) they maintain the same regs and run the cars without further modification. This keeps a level playing field for all of the drivers and makes the racing between them more competitive.

If you wanted to enter this championship and be competitive, you would either need to buy an ex-cup race car, or a 197 cup car with a sadav box.

You could always buy this though, might save you time and money prepping your own road car.

  Turbos.
I was going to say LMA... but as Steve says if they are ex-Cup cars there is no point using your road Cup as you'll just get owned.

I should be doing an LMA race in a couple of months, so should be interesting. Don't the Clios get to run in their own class as well?

Typical spend for me and my dad is £3k per racing weekend. That is food, hotels, test day, race day, race support and entry fees. Would be a whole lot cheaper if you look after the car yourself and do without the niceities.

Silverstone National, August 9/10. Not confirmed yet though... doing either that or the GT Cup at Brands on the same weekend.

Thanks a lot.

car's engine is too big for stock hatch, so would have to be hot hatch.

loads of info on there.

get involved and have a good time!

Great help :) just been reading through the tech regs http://www.750mc.co.uk/images/uploaded/Hot-Hatch-2008-regs.pdf

Seems like they are not as strict on mods in class D as the dunlop sport maxx. Class D (standard) seems the most appealing to me as some things can be changed, suspension, brakes, exhaust back from mani, and cams and stuff.

Cheers for the links. :D And yes, i want to get involved!
