Cracked Rear Disc Help/Advice...

Car  C3 Picasso Beast
Was washing the car yesterday and spotted what's shown in the picture below on the drivers side!! Not sure how long it's been like this but f**ked me right off as I only had new discs fitted at the start of November last year and they're not cheap ones either but genuine Renault bought from Renault Wolverhampton! Have only done about 3k miles on them so for this to happen :mad: My questions are then the following please;

1) What would have caused it??
2) How safe is it to drive with exactly as I went out today and done a few emergency stops and braking seemed fine??
3) Should I be in a hurry to get it sorted??

Thanks

lol at doing emergency stops to test it!

I wouldn't drive it myself.

I would defo get them changed asap. There been a few threads about cracked rear dics.

I wouldn't be driving it thats for sure!!!

Do genuine Renault parts not carry a 12m guarantee??

Do genuine Renault parts not carry a 12m guarantee??

Should do I guess but I'm not sure how I'd go about sorting it out as I bought them through eBay from them?? Guess I can email them to see what they say...

I'm right in thinking I'll have to have both rear discs replaced yes?? Also will the pads need doing as would this have f**ked them up too??

I would def change the pads as well, its good practice to do it when swapping discs anyway, but in your case I would def do it, plus they cost f**k all.

I just swapped mine on Friday because of the exact same problem. I wouldn't drive it 'til it's sorted personally, if it snaps, you're in a whole world of bother!

that'll be seized hardcore. My bias was out big time and it was getting PIPING hot and didn't manage to crack like that

Hero...

I've seen quite a few, get it changed ASAP... I wouldn't even be driving the car with that!

As others have said I would say for the amount of wear on that disk that the caliper is sticking/seized which has probably caused it to heat up and crack. Mine have been on for 10k and look brand new.

common. happened to mine a couple of years ago.
do not drive it, replace with genuine discs, smooth and grease sliders on calipers while replacing discs.

So in conclusion it's really f**ked and I shouldn't be driving it!! I'll need to drive it to get it to a garage though so I'll just have to take it easy I guess :S Think I'll pay the extra and get Renault to sort it out...hopefully!

So from looking at the pic then the most common cause is likely to be that the caliper is seized on right?? What causes this then?? Also if this was the case surely they'd be some like grinding noise or something?? Had the sportlines fitted about a month ago so it couldn't have been like this before that otherwise the garage would have noticed and said?!?

That's what I done last time and now this has happened so I'm abit put off that idea now...probably no fault of the garage who fitted them but something ain't right for this to happen after 3k!

I'd do it yourself. Really not that hard to do. I managed to do new disk and pads all round in a day and i'd never done them before. Plus there are plenty of guides online.

£304!!!

Parts are about £120ish, and it's such an easy job to do!

DO NOT PAY RENAULT £300! you must be mental, tbh after seeing some of the work carried out by certain main dealers I would much rather trust my back street mechanic to do my work. Also if you have any problems I find you are less likely to get fobbed off!

as said parts are £120 tops then an hours labour plus vat at a local garage your under £200........

looking at the disks though, your sliders may be seized so maybe think abot doing a caliper rebuild and fresh fluid etc which will still be cheaper than renaults price!!!

you might wanna check you caliper!! when that happened to me its because my caliper had failed and was sticking could smell it when driving and could physically feel the heat when walking past it to close the garage on a night.
