Creating a forum

No idea if this is the right place to post this but hey-hoe...

I've recenlty moved into a new build block of flats (small development of only 12 flats).

A few issues have cropped up that it'd be good for all the residents to be involved/discuss and it's pain tyring to get everyone together etc...

Now I thought about setting up a facebook page but not everyone is on there, so thought maybe it's worth creating some sort of internet forum.

Issue is I know NOTHING about doing such a thing and don't want to have to pay for it either.

Ideally it would be secure so only resedents could log in etc.

Any sugestions? I've had a quick look on google and came across a site called forumotion or something along those lines...obviously I don't want to go and sign up for something thats just crap or doesn't suit the needs.

look at phpbb forums.

Get PHPbb.

FTP all the files across to your server.

Set up a database on the server

Run the install script (follow instructions that come with it).

Create a simple sub forum "discussion"

Set it up so new members require your authorisation to join/sign up.

That's a succinct summary of how you do it. Loads of info online.

ClioSport is much more advanced than that but you don't need anything as fancy as us i'm guessing

Great idea though mate I like it. Issues can be sorted out super quickly.

Cheers all, I've had a quick look at invisionfree and at a glance it doesn't apear to be much different to the one I've used.

It's taking shape quite nicely now. Going to print out a quick note with the url on and drop it in the letter boxes. Hopefully everyone will see the benefits and sign up to it.

look at phpbb forums.

Easy to setup, but INFURIATING to administer on a day-to-day basis. The phpbb forums come across as being slightly elitist too - "What? You mean you don't know the answer to that already?" ;)

Never administered vbulletin (or alternatives) before, so I can't really compare.
