Cruise control tripping out on its own???

  E36 M3. 182
I was driving down the motorway, cruise on, 70 mph, happy days, when it decided to disengage on its own. The selector switch on the bottom right console basically self selected itself back to the central position.
On trying to re select the cruise selection, it wouldnt stay in position. The speed limit selection was unaffected, and worked fine ( I used it to make sure the issue was confined to the cruise control side of things).
After an hour or so of driving manually, I pulled over for half an hour for a kip and turned the engine off. After this, I continued my journey and the cruise control worked fine for the remaining 200 miles or so. I am puzzled that something can fail, yet reset itself and not reoccur later during a long trip...... If it was a temperature related issue, surely it would have got hot enough during the second leg of the trip to fail. Could it be a wiring issue, maybe a short somewhere or dodgy relay??? Im not much good with electrics, anyone got any ideas???

Cheers again fella! What sensors are cruise control specific?? Id assume it takes wheel speed from somewhere, and has some sort of input into the throttle asembly??
