Cup to phase 1?

  Stripped yozza'd cup
So something has been playing on my mind for a while.....

Should I have bought a phase 1 instead of a cup? Has anyone made this transition?

My aim for the Clio is to give it a purposeful track look and feel. Stripped, buckets, low and 15's.

I've been looking around and I could buy a ph1 in a very nice spec for the value of my cup... I'm just not sure.

Opinions please?

The only real main difference from the Cup apart from the weight is the throttle cable.

Now in my opinion - i went from a phase 1 to a 182 and i miss the raw driving experience of the Phase 1 personally, i adored that car! Wether selling the Cup to buy one is a good idea i dont know!

I've never driven a ph1 so can't comment on that really.

But surely if you already own a cup and want to track it then you have a perfect base to start already. No ABS, air con etc.

Plus if you've owned your cup for a while. You have probably done certain maintance to it and know its sound.

Only benefit i see is it may free a little cash up for mods.

Go and test drive a couple of ph1's its all down to personal preference.

I guess I just need to drive one I suppose.

I have spent a fair amount of money on it really, rear shocks, cam belt and aux belt, dephaser, service, Powerflex dogbone and a shortshift now. But I knew about these problems when I bought it so got a very good deal. In total, with all the above it's cost me £3250 now.

The only reason I was considering it is for the money I could free up for mods. I'm just being impatient I guess.

i went from a 182 to a ph1 and the ph1 did feel more raw but i missed the creature comforts. The cable throttle was more responsive but the cable was very stiff and jerky compared to the electric one of the 182. Standard to standard i didn't really notice but difference in performance, only when it was stripped out. I'd keep your cup if you know its history and its not falling apart. Even what appears to be a 'good' ph1 could turn out to a nail

keep your cup i did exactly the same (i don't regret it because I also wanted to make a track car but i did miss the 182 day to day - just a nicer place to be)

I guess that's the most sensible option.... I'm just getting frustrated because there's so many things that I want to do to get it right but I just don't have the cash.

i paid 1800 for my ph1 172, had it a month, cracking car, owned a williams 3 and a cup in the past, wanted something cheap and quick to run around in and eventually track, think they are great value at the moment if u buy a well looked after example, and they are great fun to drive, williams felt the most special out of the lot of them though, man i wish i had kept that car, was a low mileage minter.

If I was to choose between the two i'd go for the ph1, I lvoe them. However if I had a good cup that had had work carried on it then i'd keep it. Not worth risking getting a nail of a ph1. Good ones are getting increasingly rarer.
