Custom Image Slideshow for Website?

I'm looking to create a slideshow for the index page of my website which would basically be a 900px x 300px image that fades to another image after a set period of time - calling up the images from a folder on the server and looping back to the first image once it had gone through them all. That's all, nothing fancy particularly.

I've tried using autoviewer, but that puts text on top of the image and doesn't autostart and I'd quite like to learn how to code it anyway.

Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction for this please? I imagine it's just a few lines of js or something, but struggling to find anything.
