Customised Rear Lights - finally got rid of the smoked ones

  mx5
The other day I bought some clear rear lights from DKoo2009 off here, and then set about tinting them. As ive got a couple of holidays coming up, i couldnt really afford to splash out on some fks, so had a go at making my own.

It only cost me £23 including the tint spray and lacquer, and Im pretty happy with how they have come out. (though the finish isnt perfect).

Let me know what you think, C+c welcome.

Not sure really, better than the smoked but for some reason looks like you've just got busy with black insulation tape. Not bad though!

Cheers for the comments everyone.

I get what some of you are saying about the black lines, but without them the circles from the original lights were way to obvious. I wanted to try something a bit different than the standard ones and considering how little it cost Im well happy with them.

Another thing i like about them is that when you open the boot, rather than being the textured red plastic its light grey which looks better imo.

Its just black tape which i then laquered over so that it was shiny and the lights were smooth, its not ideal, but i tried masking it up to paint them and it got ridiculously fiddly and hard to get the lines even, so i just did this.

I did like 5 layers of laquer over the top to get it so the tape didnt stick out at all and there was no chance of it peeling.

When spraying them, did you notice the paint go cloudy/smoked before applying the clear enamel? I only ask as I've just done the exact same thing (after selling my FK's, too bling!) and they aren't as 'red' as standard.

No I didnt :S It just seemed really transparent for the first couple of layers. When i did the clearcoat tho the clear strip in the middle went very cloudy until it dried completely, but now it seems ok

this pic doesnt really show it that well, but in real life they are pretty much identical

Loads better mate, although you seem to have too many visual mods... I'd lose the chequered roof and lower it personally. :)

Hmm, don't like any of it mate tbh including the roof.

However, the new lights do look better than the old way at least.

Not a fan of the lights tbh, if you removed the black strip it would look 100% better,

deffo needs lowering tho ;)
