CV boot and tool

When fitting my coilovers my shock slammed down onto the CV boot and caused a small hole near the clip by the hub. I thought it would be reet as it was a very small nick out of it

Now I have noticed lots of grease coming out of it so will need to replace it.

I read that it needs to be fitted with a cone tool as a genuine boot is a hard rubber/plastic.

So I was contemplating whether to buy a non genuine so I can slide it over. Do you still need a sphere tool to fit non genuines?

I went to my local motor factors and they listed 5 different sized boots for my car. So would be easier to just get one from Renault.. But I worry about needing this tool.

Annoys me that the boot was fine until I messed up :dapprove:

So where can you buy this tool? I am hoping the shaft doesn't need to be removed to do the outer boot.

There is a kit on ebay that come with a cone.

Or just take the shaft and bits down to a local and ask to use their cone, literally takes 2 seconds to get it on.

Get a proper on too, I found the soft one split and had to redo it with a hard one anyway.

I will buy a genuine boot I think to make it easier.

I don't really want to have to take the shaft out if I can help it.

Its the passanger side that mine has gone, which is the gearbox side? I had the gearbox oil changed recently and don't fancy getting more if I can help it.

Drain it out of the sump plug on the gearbox. It would depend how old the oil was if I was going to do that, if it's old and grey I'd just put fresh gear oil in.

Was done around 7k ago. I'm not sure on what the service interval is for changing it?

most motor factors sell a universal stretchy rubber boot that you cut to size an slide over with the cone i think i paid a tenner for boot including the cone i used to use um all time when i worked at stratstone as its less labour intensive

I have just had a look on ebay at the 'stretch' boots.

If I got one of these, I would be able to do the outer boot with the shaft left in the gearbox?

If I buy a genuine renault boot, I won't need the tool will I? As I will be removing the CV joint from the shaft.

if you have the tool an the stretchy boot all you need to do is remove the driveshaft from the hub but you can leave it in the box. Then just trim your boot to size soak it in boiling water an apply a small amout of grease to the cone an then slide it over your joint fill with cv grease fit clip an build back up. Or with a renault boot remove shaft from box an car an remove joint fit boot an put back together

^ that clears it up.

I though the tool was needed for it either way. I'l get the Renault one and take everything apart. At least that way its done properly with a decent part.

Got a motrio one from renault and its not very stretchy and has crap clips included so going to just get another universal stretchy boot to do it.

how did you get on with this ? i accidently split my cv boot, whilst fitting my new abs ring on drivers side, and dont taking it all out the gearbox?

I would buy a genuine one and just fit it properly, the stretching tools normally stretch it permanently and they never fit properly.

It's not that much hassle to take the CV joint off.
