CV boot

I think this is the problem, took a front n/s wheel off,
and the inside has was looks like greese round it,

had a nose about, and theres a crack in the rubber bit that goes from the hub to the driveshaft (this is the CV boot no??)

ive not noticed anything whilst driving so i dont think the boots accually dead, perhaps just the rubber??

can i get the rubber changed/change the rubber myself??
or do i need a whole new CV boot/entire driveshaft??

cheers guys.

you can renew the boots but the CV will need cleaning out thoroughly to remove any grit that will have made its way in. if it's been like that for a while, you may already have damage to the joint (can be inspected once they're off)

tbh i think its been like it for a while, i remember a tiny bit being there when i last took the wheel off,

would this mean new driveshaft?? or does the CV detatch from the driveshaft??

not sure about the particular car you've got, but they usually knock off the end of the driveshaft

you can buy 'stretchy' replacement boots that will go on without having to remove the CV, if the joint can't be taken off the end of the shaft

tbh, despite what i've said, it's easiest just to clean the joint out (repack with grease) and fit a new boot - see if it develops any problems later, rather than just automatically go for a new joint now

old thread, same prob for me ;

I bought the "stretchy" universal boots to replace the oem ones.
the CV-joint needs cleaning , can this be done using brake-cleaner or is/will this be too harsch a method ? How to clean ?
