Daily hack - Leon Cupra wreck

I don't have a home forum anymore and the seat cupra one looks dead, so thought I'd have a moan on here.
Against my better (lack of) judgement, I bought this piece of sh*t to use as a daily car and return some funds from my Vectra.

The advert was a complete lie, but yet I still just checked under the bonnet and drove it home - massively out of character for me. Idiot.
On the drive home, the 'to do' list was starting:
Horrible vibration, whining gearbox, oil leak, missing aesthetic parts, water in all footwells (thus steaming cabin), horrible light tints, rusted door and so on and so forth.
I cried myself to sleep.

A week passes and Jim kindly took the wreck for an MOT just to see what it would fail on, despite not being due until Feb.
A couple of bulbs and a split gaiter, which were remedied easily enough, so at least I could have 12 months legal motoring. First job done.
Jim then balanced the wheels - as none of them had any weights! yet the vibration was still there, only not as bad. Put that to the back of the list, for now.

Door seals next. Common on these:

Passenger front never been done, so stripped and sealed with Butyl. Rain gully cleared as well.

Did find that the outer seal on a rear door had come away, so used some black instant gasket to assist

Speaker not working properly - edges had set in, maybe due to water ingress. Got heat gun on them and popped back out. fixed.

As common as the door seals apparently. Cam cover gaskets had gone (I thought external, but internal also).
All 4 plugs swimming in oil.

And rear jacking point cover only had two clips, so was on the piss big time.
Utilised some Saxo body panel clips. Fck it.

Next night I was paranoid about the oil leak, so picked up some gaskets.

Both outer and inner gaskets snapped off when removing, they'd gone very brittle. new ones made of a rubbery plastic also, so wonder how long they'll last.

Inside the cam cover needed a bit of a clean, I usually wouldn't bother but was waiting for some instant gasket to cure, so why not.

After another week, both Jim and I visited a Leon breaker in Leeds, to pick up some parts.
The guy pretty much had every little thing I wanted.
The previous owners had put an air filter on and pissed up all the pipework and also put a dump valve on it.

They'd also painted the battery cover. Why?!
The breaker had all the bits + an engine cover as that was missing.

It drove better with the standard box on and no silly psssch noises.

Breaker had a stock unit, which is miles better for listening to Radio 4.

Gutted, he didn't have a climate screen.. but I'll get one later.
Then set about trying to get the fish ponds out of the footwell. Several towels later, I left a heater on full whack for the day.

Next day, no fog. Door seals holding as well, so that's sorted.

Yes I was stuck in traffic, but the EML then comes on.
Was driving like a pile of sh*t anyway, surging and generally slow. Disconnected the MAF and it runs fine, so got a new one:

Drives better, but still a bit surgy come off the loud pedal, so suspect throttle body or N75 valve thing - but it'll do for now.

As mentioned the vibration was still there, despite having the wheels balanced. So bought some Cupra R wheels from Jim and stuck them on. Safe to say there is something wrong with the OZ :( Could just be the cheapo tyres, but I suspect its worse, given this is already a wreck.
Thats it for now!

Oh yeah forgot to say, its a Cupra (not R) with 120k on the clock. Spax coilovers are the only real highlight - albeit shockingly uncomfortable. It has Cupra R bits + interior although minus the rear bumper.

A mistake I made. Pay for it, I will.

Whoops, fogot to mention the door.
The seals on the drivers rear door, had held up well. So well, that water was entering the car via the speaker.
The water had built up in the door due to the run off/drain bugs being blocked and had sat there for years slowing rotting it from the inside out.
Luckily the breakers had a better door - although slightly more colourful than the one it replaced, so a colour correction detail is in order.

£50 though and he swapped it. Can't say fairer than that.

I also have a Leon that I wasn't happy with but still bought lol. I should've known better having worked at a car sales!

At least you're doing what I did and tackling everything you're not happy with, so fair play.

Breakers sounds like a gem, some are awesome but some would have told you that doors £350..
 
Good effort, I have a bora on the same platform whch was also a terrible purchase, I think the shell, dash and carpets are about the only bits that havent been removed or replaced now.

Really? One of the most reliable cars I owned. My Bora was on 167k and running just shy 250bhp when I sold it.

Never said it wasnt reliable! I wanted a PD130 with the 6 speed box and I wanted a black one. Went shopping to find a nice example with FSH and good paint and wound up buying a black one....
Bought from a guy on an estate who's wife arried home with it warm, in the rain, with 108k and no history.
It had obviously been bought at around 6 years old and just run into the ground so the first 6 months of ownership were intensely painful, it got:
Disks, pads, lines and fluid
Wheels and tyres
Springs, dampers and every bush/joint replaced
Front wheel bearings
clutch
turbo
engine mounts
Full service, belts, filters and fluids
electric window regulators
Central locking solenoid
The interior was all sticky and muddy from kids, so all the plastics were removed and cleaned in the bath and the seats shampoo'd
Full paint correction over the course of a week
towbar
Cruise control
Probably loads more Ive blanked from my mind due to the pain :p

Touch wood in the last 60k it's had oil changes every 10k, belts and filters at 180k, another pair of wishbone bushes to keep it sharp and an exhaust repair for the MOT. I'll have another 30k (12 months) out of it and sell it on.

My Subaru is similar to this. I bought it thinking it only needed a clean and a wheel refurb.

I think I'll end up spending 4x the purchase price just getting it to a standard.
 
I like threads like this, what really f***s me off is that gash 'Fly Eye' crap chav's always seem to use, along with the De-Wiper the rear Windows thing, utter tripe, surprised they didn't do it on this lol.

That's a lot of effort mate, was it worth spending the cash on? Just thinking you could have sold it on and bought something needing less work?

I like it though.
 
It makes financial sense if you keep it for a LONG time. Mine will be sold when it needs something big, or at 210k as I'll then personally have driven 100k in it.
It doesnt make sense if you do all the work and expense and then give it to someone else to reap the benefit and do it all over again!

Its probably not worth spending cash on, but when its £30 here, £20 there... As Jim said to me recently (as I was moaning about the wreck in my kitchen) that when you look at a picture of yourself 10 years ago and you weigh 11 stone, then look in the mirror and compare your current 20 stone, you're shocked and upset. But 10 years and a couple of lb's a month.. you don't notice. It's like being fingered over 10 years and then fisted randomly one night. I think that's what he wast trying to say as well.

I couldn't sell it on though and lose out, because that would be the sensible thing to do.

Santa didn't bring me a better car, so I have continued with more work on the wreck.

Last update, I'd had the door swapped and fixed a few bits. BUT... some lingering problems remained. Firstly, a vibration on the motorway, which was cured by running on these:

Second long running issue was a throttle surge. Which was a bit of a difficult one to understand.
Since I got the car, it has felt slow. Since replacing the dump valve, MAF and a few other basics, it felt even slower. More so, it felt like the throttle was being held back and when coming off the pedal to change gear, resulted in a surge of power in and out.
I did a bit of research on the forums and I swear that 99% of VAG owners have no fcking clue and feel it is financially viable to just repost the same old sh*t others have suggested. At first, it was suggested an N75 valve was at fault, then the PCV valve, then a N249 valve and then the dump valve and then boost leaks and injectors. So no clue then.
Once upon a time I owned an Audi A8 and bought Vagcom. I found the lead in the garage and thought wise to start from there. So off we go:

My ebay OBD scanner that has been mega handy, didn't pick this one up, so I guess it can't go into all systems with it being a basic scanner.
Anyway, the clue with this one, is that the N249 is not a mechanical component. Looking at it, it is a solenoid. If it had a problem, it would show as 'electrical malfunction' (apparently) but the clue is that it is 'mechanical malfunction'. The 35-00 bit means it is a permanent issue, which also helps. The N249 is connected to the dump valve (which I recently replaced for an original) so I popped the bonnet.

Back in the car, cleared the codes.
Then did a throttle body reset (as even though it was obvious what the issue is/was..) just for the lolz.

Went out for a test run and to my suprise the car is pretty fast! I mean, its not mindblowing, but it'll do. You can tell it has been mapped, probably badly... but it spins up, in these conditions at about 2,500rmp in 2nd and 3rd. The local slags at Mcdonalds will love it.

Took the light apart and swapped the bulb, which worked at first, but when the door closed and re-opened, it didn't work again.
Stuck the multi-meter on it when it wasn't working and it shows 0.6v!!!
Checked the working door light on the front for voltage:

Went back to the door not working and slammed it like my wife's head was in the gap. Opened it again and I got 12v.
So I'd hazard a guess that the loom connector in the door is a little loose, which means removing the door card again, fck that for tonight.

The eagle eyed will have noticed the jacking point covers (on the front, both sides) missing. One of them forms part of the A19 I'd guess, whilst I removed the sole remaining to have it touched up when the replacement arrives.

Next thing was to sort out the vibration on the old superleggeras. When I took them off, I noticed a lack of spigot rings!
Didn't need to check, but they were definately required. Excuse to see if the vernier battery still works.

Great success, the battery has survived winter so far.
Ordered a set of spigots from ebay for £6 and that has cured the vibration. Happy with that.
Why the previous owner didn't do that, its beyond me.

Next drama was 'surging'. It was doing my head in. The symptom was:
Foot half on throttle accelerating nicely, go to change gear, so foot off of throttle and the car would 'surge' forward as if it was held back, but then instantly drop the revs as normal. I thought I could live with that for a while, but I was ready to drive it into the canal so had to find a solution.
Some backwater googling on the Audi forums suggested the throttle body might be on the piss. I bought a new gasket for it and took it apart to have a look.

Got the carb cleaner out and put some Enya on + set about cleaning it up.
Stuck it back on after a good half hour of scrubing and then did a throttle body alignment via vagcom once again.
Great success - the surging has been cured. Who would have thought.

Next major noise to front, was/is THE gearbox. The grinding and groaning coming down the gears was embarrassing in the carpark at work.
I was on the look out for a new gearbox thinking it was beyond repair, even looked at getting the current one refurbished.... until.... some red neck VW forum from the states referenced a 'shim' that cures it. I thought it meant taking the box out and stripping it, but it appears not. After finding the right vw lingo, it was then easy to track down the problem documented in the UK.
So I ordered a 'shim' and a 'cap' for £15 and set about having a bash at it.

There's a small snap ring to take off, then you can move the shaft back and forth. Apparently too much movement is what the noise is.

At this point, I'm thinking that the fix is a joke and there is no way it will work. The shim looks like its made from play-do and the shaft still moves as normal! madness.
