Damaged tyre question

Got to work today to find a inch long gash in the tyre wall of the front left;
The fronts are Pirelli PZero, and the rears are Yoko A539.

Should I swap the tyre like for like? Would there be any implications on handling etc if I were to put a Pilot Exalto on as a replacement?

I think the advice will be that you should always replace tyres in pairs on the same axle...

As said, advice will be to replace in pairs but nothing to stop you just replacing that one.

Thanks for your help. Looks like I'm off to buy a set of tyres then! Any suggestions on a good winter tyre? I have seen the tyre poll but wondered if there are any in that list that are particularly good for winter conditions. cheers Nick

If you want proper winter tyres look for Toyo snow proxies or Hankooks version. Pirelli, Goodyear etc do their own winter tyres but they are far from cheap!

Normal high performance tyres such as PS3s, Pzero nero etc will still be good but you start to notice a difference in cold temperatures. Hankook V12s and Uniroyal rainsport 2s are both highly thought after on this forum but I haven't tried either on a Clio. Only used Pirelli Pzero neros and Michelins myself.

Think I'm going to buy some Uniroyal Rainsports, look like a good choice for this time of year. Any opinions on driving with the tyre in it's current state? They will be changed asap, ordered from Camskill today, but in the mean time what would people do?

It should be fine, just take it easy. But you're doing the right thing changing it.

I've seen far worse come into work and its been like that ages because they don't want to get rid of it whilst it has useable tread.

Thanks for the advice. The car is my daily so it's not seeing any hard driving at the minute, hopefully it wont get any worse over the next few days.

It shouldn't get any worse. I would imagine you have just caught a curb or similar and as long as it hasnt gone down to the canvas it should be ok. But peace of mind by changing is a good move. I never change one tyre always a pair. Makes me cringe to see different tyres on the same axle. I have know people with 2 well worn tyres get a puncture in one and put a brand new one in its place leaving the other as it is.
I too might try the rainsports but have heard they are not too good in the summer. But saying that they would of been fine this year.
Be interesting how you find them.

You've created a weak spot in the strength and structure of the sidewall. As such it is far more likely to 'fail' if you load it up.

Don't stress it and you should be OK until it's changed.

If you're considering winter tyres...that's as a full set of four? Not mixing two with the A539s?

Is that not just a nik in the rim protector?
