Car cutting out!

Hiya,
Just bought this car a couple of weeks ago, has a full and valid MOT certificate.
The lad i bought it off said it had had a problem with the Co2 emissions filter or something but it had been fixed.
Now when I drive the car and either go near 2nd gear or come to stop for traffic/lights etc the light underneath the petrol icon comes on
(looks like a coil with a box below it?) and the car cuts out.
This doesnt seem to happen if I keep the revs up.
Now this morning I went to start it up and just go on a little drive the battery was completely flat, the engine wouldnt even turn over so I had to get a jump start off my neighbor.
Anyone have any idea whats causing this?
Tried to call the lad I bought it off but just going straight to voicemail.
(the cars a Y reg 1.2 16 valve if its any help)
Sorry I literally know nothing about cars.. and garages seem to see the blonde girl coming and rip me off so just thought I would ask you guys first.

hi, sorry this will be no help but ive got an 02 1.2 16v and mine does this too. The battery has never run flat but sometimes if i turn the engine on the tickover varies by going high and low and sometimes feels like its going to stall so i have to keep revving to keep it going.
Im going to the garage on tuesday to get them to have a look so if i find out what it is i will let you know.
P.s. im a geordie too haha
