de-cating

how can i decat my standard exhaust?

please help people as i dont want to buy a new system as i dont like to look of a dustbin hanging of the back of cars,

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
disconnect your exhaust and measure the length of the cat - then cut it out with a hacksaw. Buy some tubular steel that will sleeve over were the original cat went onto the original pipe. Measure it out to the same size as your cat and then allow 1" inch extra at either side. Weld it on and refit cat.

Freds supposed to be doing this he's got side tracked by a V6 at the moment.

Fred has some pics of the engine one mount will work the others need custom making. You need to cut away at the chassic though so you'd need to weld some straight back into it.

1.8 VAG engine is a better option though.

Out the box the 225 makes 280 or so hp. You need to spend a fair bit ona 172 turbo conversion to get that then there the optiosn of bigger turbos etc off the sheft there kits taking them to 350hp or so on stock internals and there massive Hp modesl out ther. That compnay with the twin engiend TT have 450hp an engine or so.

if you want it for track days then sort the suspension brakes and gearbox first IMO. Get a used Cup racer and road legal it.

Matts car is very quick straight line and not bad on the bends but at the end of the day you'd be better spending the money on suspension and brakes and some normal tunning of the 172 or if yuo can get a sequencial geabrox for track work.

how do i get a gear box that you just click up or down to change gears, are these expensive and do they give quicker gear chaning time?

Yep £6k list price and not usuable every day as there a bit of a apin plus no one has ever as far as i known tried to live with a Cup racer on the road day to day so gearbox life is unclear you might need a rebult ever year or so.

However if you shop round you might pick up a used 6 speed box for £3.5k and a 5 speed for £2.5k then say £1k for the extra bit you need ie ingition cut custom shafts clutch etc and then get it fitted.

Gains well I'd say there very significant after all you don't ever lift so that a few seconds extra power on the upshifts. I think track and race car reconed it was worth 4 second on a track on adverage. To giove you an idea a Cup road car will do Donnington in about 1.30 the Cup racers would pull a 1.47 but they have the extra back section to do which must be an extra 25 second or so.
