de-phaser pulley symptoms(sp)

how can you tell if you your de pahsers on its way out? on my car if you rev it to 3 grand let it drop it has a top end knock wondered if could be the pulley

If the knocking clears about 1800rpm then returns as it drops and it sounds like a tractor then yes its probably the dephasher. Don't run it anymore until its sorted as you don't want it to let go completely.

DrRollo posted some videos of the dephaser on his old 172 if you search for them so you can compare.
