Decat (Curious about something)

  Clio 1.6 16v
Hi Guys,

I have just had my ashley exhaust fitted onto my clio (mk 2 phase 1 16v)
And i am curious as to whats what with the Cat converter.

Is the cat on my clio welded on or is it just clamped? sorry if this is making no sense.

Would it be worth me just buying a decat manifold? and could i just get this from a brokers?

Cheers guys!

I don't quite understand the question, but the CAT is usually part of a pipe that is fixed to your exhaust manifold. IK doubt you would get one from a brokers, it is an aftermarket part.

You realise your car will fail it's MOT with a Decat, right? And it is technically illegal (although some will now argue with me)? Just checking as you don't seem to know anything about it.

Exhaust goes like this from front to back

Manifold-cat-centre secion-backbox

The manifold is bolted to the cat and the cat bolts to the centre section. A de-cat pipe is just a plane bit of pipe that replaces the cat.

Nah i know whats what with the decat pipe and what not, i was just curious as i didn't know how much work it would be putting it on and off.

So from my point of view i have my cat back ashley exhaust, then rear silencer, then CAT then manifold? right. So the decat would be removing The cat converter but the question i meant was is the cat welded onto the exhaust manifold or is it attached by a clamp?

Yeah it will fail its MOT but the cat will be going back on for then, Also i don't know about the decat being illegal when its on the car so im not going to argue this point :)

Ahh cheers stu i so basically i could just clamp the decat pipe in the place of the CAT? or would it need welding? as i cant be bothered to do about 4 sets of welding moving it on and off for MOT's!

The decat pipe itself isn't illegal, but if you fail emissions it is. If VOSA pull you and test your car your probably screwed, but to be fair that's very very unlikely. If a local copper pulls you and sees it he will just ask you to get it tested and show proof its legal. Again, unlikely.

There we go, yeah im not really worried about being pulled with it as i know plenty of people in my town with it done to their cars :)

Jonny1*2 My bad i do have good grammar as i hate it my self when i cant understand what people are typing, however when you are at work and having to type in intervals so you dont get spotted times become hard.

Many thanks guys, I shall get it done this weekend coming up then!

Personal never see any vosa in 3 years of driving but it's a risk you take. Weigh up the risk for yourself.

Yeah i havent ever seen any vosa at all in honesty so i think i will be alright... :)

Cheers for the help

Also you don't have to legally stop for VOSA unless the police are present.

Absolutely crawling with them round here, VOSA teamed up with the police is standard A12 commute stuff - Luckily they are usually stopping foreign lorries by the looks of things. But you do see them all the time down here in lay-bys. I am a little bit wary, but tbh i think I should be more worried about my speed :rasp:

Yeah, if you aren't doing anything 'stoppable' then you shouldn't be concerned. If you are doing handbrake turns in McDonalds carpark then I would think twice.

Really?! luckily I dont have to come down the A12 in my car that often! :) Every once in a few months they have a day of pulling over everyone and testing them on the A14 but not very often at all.

Yeah, on a good day they have ANPR camera's, those VOSA Galaxys, traffic police and fleets; yes fleets of bikes - Hurrah! :dead:

Surely if you got pulled and failed the emissions, you could just say that you didnt know that your cat was broke/ sports cat broke and yu'd get a producer or something?

I don't actually know, ive only ever been pulled once in the 2 years i have had of driving and that was the cop just doing a "hey look a modified car lets pull him" menouver :)

Lets put it this way it can't be that bad seeing as people aren't at all sure of what the correct answer is!
