DECAT MOT

  clio sport 182 cup
Hi everyone,

ive owned my clio sport 182 for about 6 months now and i love it as the car is so much fun to drive

problem ive got now is the mot is up and the car has a decat .... from what i can gather this means it will fail the mot on emissions even though everything else on it is mint

i dont have the original cat and having trouble finding a gargage in my area thats going to let it slide

the tax disc runs out next week and i really dont know what to do :(

does anyone have any advice on what to do or been in a smiliar situation ?

how much would a new cat set me back in a garage ?

Unless you know the garage personally you'll struggle.

MOT stations often have cars from the ministry sent in to try and catch them out. Hence why no one will be willing.

Cough up for a cat time.

you'll struggle to find someone willing to own up over the phone but in person might be open to a bribe if you make it known prior to inspection / booking in person but rules are tight these days and can get in serious crap for doing so, like above get a cheap one from like renparts or similar and just bodge it on, hopefully decat bolts arent rotten yet.

As said, just get a second hand cat and keep it in the garage for the MOT every year. Switch it over and then you don't have to worry.

Or leave it in the passenger seat when you go for the MOT, ask them to do it for you for a bit of extra wonga. Chances are for the extra money they wont even bother and will just pass it for you some how. (using another cars emissions in the garage)

cheers for the replies guys ...

gonna go in person to a few places on the weekend with a wad of notes hopefully catch someone in the right mood ( fingers crossed)

am i correct in saying im not gonna have much change out of a grand if worst comes to worst and i have to have a brand new cat for it ??

how much are we looking at second hand ? and how difficult is it going to be to put it in myself ?

You can buy a generic cat that will fit for just shy of 200.

renault will want £1,000+ for a genuine one.

Do not buy a brand new Renault cat. They are £2500 LOL

You can get a decent second hand one for for £60 odd.

Or an aftermarket one for £120 odd from memory. There was a post about it recently.

Easy enough to change over yourself. Just a couple of bolts and a bit of force.

great ! hadnt realised you could get them that cheap priced exactly what i need on ebay for 100 quid all in

not exactly confident to fit a cat myself but whatever il give it a go

if i cant anyone know how much a garage would roughly want to fit it for the mot ?

yea no way i would ever pay that much for a cat , really couldnt care less about the emissons paying enough road tax on it il proably just take it off as soon as it passes the mot

I had one made for me when I did a 182 manifold swap on my 172, £60 including buying a shitty universal cat for MOT time.

Swansea , Wales - banther

fred@btm - thanks for the offer and if i was closer to birmingham i would be with you by now

unfortunatley a 300 mile round trip, a tank + 1/2 of fuel and a toll bridge are making it slightly difficult for me to justify :(

anyway thanks for all the help guys

i think im gonna order that cheap cat off ebay and then either get one of my mates to help me put it on or chuck the garage a few extra quid to put it on when i get the mot done

Ive got decat and seen the readings, would be surprised if a cheap cat would bring mine down, luckily for me I have built up a good relationship with garage and last 2 mot's have been passed ;).

If I were you I would travel and take an offer from members on here, rather than spend cash on a cheap cat and find it doesn't bring it down to required level.

yea thats who i got it from on ebay £100 all in and its already here today !

just need to fit the thing now

its easy to replace the cat, access is fine providing you get it up on some axle stands. I would get a new cat to downpipe fixing kit too.
