Decat... Silenced or Unsilenced?

As above, I'm going to order a decat and want to know your views?

Basically, I have a Ktec supersport system on the 172, which is quite loud as some may know... So I'm not sure whether to go all out "boy racer style" and get just a decat, or get a silenced one to make it not ridiculously loud.

What do you peeps think? Videos of the difference may help?
(id be going for the ktec decat btw so that all my system matches :eek: )

if you have an already loud system then the decat will make it louder lol

i would get a silenced one if your happy with the noise of your ktec at the moment.

I know it's going to make it louder, just don't know whether the unsilenced one will make it "too loud". I don't want to get it and think, s**t this is far too loud! Lol

I do love a good raspy exhaust though, it's just whether the local police force think the same ;)

aye, im sure someone will be on here soon with their thoughts

i don't have the ktec so cant really comment but had a decat fitted to mine yesterday on a standard 172 mild steel exhaust system (waiting for the back box to die!) and bloody hell is it loud! :cool:

Matt 8586 has a decat yozza and says it's just about becoming unbearable now, it makes a huge difference over leaving the cat in but as to wether or not a silenced decat will shut the system up enough i'm not sure, not sure either if the benefits of a silenced or sports cat are worthwhile........from a money to power gain ratio point of view.

I would say take a ride in one with it already in and decide from that trip :)

I had exactly the same system on my 172 when it was standard, and I still have it now.
When first fitted, the Supersport without a decat seemed to drone a bit at around 70mph but was fairly quiet below that.
Adding the decat made it louder when driving below about 60mph but not by too much. However, it did get rid of the drone after 70ish which improved the sound no end, and is when you'd expect the car to be loud anyway.
I found that even though the decat did increase the noise of the car, it wasn't too much overall and it actually sounds better since fitting it. I reckon mine's got quieter since it was fitted too, possibly due to it coking up etc?

i hate decats. would never go back to one, bloddy horrible drony things on motorways etc. a much better option is keeping the cat in and removing the centre silencer. you get a raspy note with very little drone and you will still get through mot.

i have got the same exhaust system with a normal decat (mans version lol) and if anything it made the exhaust a much better sounding system its more tiny and raspy and i didnt notice getting any louder unless you put your foot flat on the floor or blip the throttle on down shifts.

The ktec supersports sounds a bit like a wet fart at times when its got a cat, once it was decated it sound like a load of pissed off wasps echo-ing in the back box great mod if you want the car to sound like a rally car in my opionion, pops and bangs remap next for me lol

I agree with th guy 2 posts above as well got rid of the 70mph drone and made it quiter at some points

The pops and bangs if you have the Supersport system and decat are VERY loud. Mine banged a lot more than it popped. Don't know if that's just because my exhaust gets hotter than a standard car though?

DMS I think i watched your YouTube vid of it earlier, didn't sound too loud tbh. Think I'm going to get one ordered tommorrow and take the risk.
Have you 2 had your warning lights come on since fitting it??


And i wouldn't mind a bit of pop and bangs lol.

I had the Supersport exhaust when the car was standard and I still had the cat. Obviously this meant the light never came on.
I didn't get a decat pipe until the blower was fitted, after which I had the Omex ECU and now the Gen90. Because neither of these ECU's rely on the second lambda sensor in any way, the light has never come on (and never should).

I have a yozza with a silenced decat, and difference between the two is quite alot, especially on the motorways.
My mates rb with a decat was way too loud, where mine is loud when you give it some, but on the 40 miles motorway journey I do everyday, its bearable.

Get a video up when you have fitted it mate, I will be very interested to hear it :)......good luck fitting it as well as I have heard the 172s are a bi!ch to fit.

Yeah it will im running the ktec stealth stainless with a miltek decat and my god its loud ask anyone thats heard it at the whitby-olivers mount meet.

I've heard that too, so I may take it to my local exhaust place who will probably only charge £10-20 to fit.

I've already got the before vid ready, so I'll post both up to show the difference.

the light never came on for me then again i only have the one sensor measuring before the cat so the decat is not getting measured on anything. definatly well worth getting if you want it raspy ill be able to get videos up by sunday if you aint had it done by then

Not seen that second drive by one... Is that on the road from Ikea island to ilkeston?

Sounds very nice mate :)...is that with the decat fitted? It sounds very nice but quieter than what I was expecting if it is....

Ive had both and the silienced really makes sweet fa difference, just get the straight through.

Nope. That's the A617 between Sutton in Ashfield and the back end of Mansfield.

Yep, that's with the decat. The camera does seem to have drowned out and muffled some of the noise though. I blame John for having a cheap camera - HD video but no h.264 audio ;)
