Decats and the law.

The 182 has a 200cell cat and I am getting a 100cell cat fitted. Half the cells must mean double the performance

Say you write your car off and the stainless steel exhaust has been covered but the decat hasnt. How are they going to tell whether you have a decat on or not??

If your insurance covers you for ''exhaust'' then surley there must be a grey area over the cat as a cat is part of the exhaust?

Insurance companies dont have grey areas. They have small print and lots of expensive lawyers.

The cells are bigger in the 100cell so the gases can travel through easier with less restriction.

Depends on size of claim. With large claims and cars regarded as suspicious (ie impreza's, hot hatches etc), insurance investigators may be used. These guys get 10% of any claim value if they manage to avoid a claim, most have mech background and would prob spot a decat easily.
However, if you were to 'accidently' remove your cat, and the fibres were to fall out (no broom handles involved, of course ), I imagine that would be nigh on impossible to spot. Would look from the outside as a normal catalytic converter.

Cats are measured in cpi (cells per inch) so 100 cell cat is less restrictive than a 200 cell cat.

But no decat is allowed on any of there policys.

Fit a decat, no longer insured, game over.

What if oyu had bought a car that had a decat but genuinely had no idea it had the cat removed?

I remember someone telling me when doing insurance and they ask the question is the car modified he made a point of saying to his knowledge etc as he wasn't a mechanic the car hasn't been altered. Yeah it probably wouldn't cover you if it turned out it had a decat, and I wouldn't say that if I knew, but I can see it happening.

You've got to wonder about all these Japanese imports that come over here pre modded, I bet they've had engine internals changed in a lot of cases yet noone will know.

got a decat on mine, will have to call Adrian Flux tomorrow as my insurance has to be renewed on Friday anyway.

will record the conversation and keep it in a safe place, just in case.
