Decent 182 for under £1500-2000 ?

  182
Hi,

I am replacing my car and will have about £2000 or a bit less, to buy a car. I want something fun and cheap to maintain. I'm weighing up options as there are lots of cheap cars but I have always liked the look of the old Clio sports.

A couple of years ago there were loads of 182s for under £1500, it seems to me like prices are rising now and most of them are over £2000.

Is £1500-2000 realistic for a 182 in decent nick, do you think?

Thanks :)

I think they’re slowly on the rise, you may get a scruffy/unloved one for £1.5k but as you’ve said, I think £2k+ is the minimum now really...

You'll also have to factor in if the belts need doing , around £700 or thereabouts.

£1500 will probs still get you something that needs the belts doing, so £2200 all in?

I've read about the belts need doing on Clios - this is the cambelt? Why is it £700 that seems like a lot?

£300-350 in parts ( if you do the Dephaser pulley which most do) and a couple of hundred in labour or a day DIY for a first timer if your confident/competent. As mentioned, £500 is closer to the mark for a specialist to do.

How often does it need doing? e.g. if it was done at 70,000 miles but I look at a car that has 140,000 miles will it need doing again.

When was it last done?

It's every 72,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first.

Shouldn't be £700, more like £4/500 tbh.

With most cars near or over 100k and approaching 20 years old you'll wanna think about doing the dephaser pulley and waterpump at the same time, if not done previously.

I paid 1300 for mine with 69k on clock last year but because it was due for belts to be done I got it cheap also it had no rear interior so he knocked abit off that. I've spent about a grand on it now everything's spot on and I reckon I'd get 2300 for it so I havent lost any money

That's interesting to know.

I am personally looking for a car that is mechanically sound, don't care about bodywork or interior really :)
I'm hoping to find one that is in my price range as people do seem capable of buying them for £1500.

But also thinking about maybe something like an MR2 which is quite easily attainable for under 2k.

water pump is off the aux pulley, so an easy enough job to do as a one off, just a replacement belt as a precaution.
