Something I hope the resident insurers can help me out with here

When getting quotes for my car is there any point in me declaring that I have a vw gearbox in it?

Obviously I know I should (and I do) but I'm wondering if it makes any difference to my premium at all? Because although ts a modification it's not exactly a performance modification it's more from a reliability standpoint

Does it come under a running gear modification or is it special on its own? I can understand if it has an LSD in there but it doesn't .

I realise this may sound stupid but when I'm on the phone to insurers and I say yeah it's a Renault with a vw gearbox I feel a bit of a dick lol

Thanks

Try a few quotes on comparison sites and see if it affects the premium, if it doesn't then you have nothing to lose and cover yourself from a possible 'scapegoat' should the proverbial hit the fan.

You have to declare it. If you smash the car up and a garage reports back you are running a VW gearbox you ain't getting paid and will face problems in the future getting cover at a reasonable price.

I told them about mine. if the worst happens im not giving them the opportunity not to pay. I dont think it affected my premium at all

mods difference.png

Seems reasonable to me, higher price is the mods shown, the lower price is a standard car. Thats for 20y/o 3 years NCB

EDIT: That's with admiral too, so not even a specialist insurer for mods. ~7% increase in price, so on an £800 policy, the mods would be £856

If the car has a VW gearbox, then it needs to be disclosed, it is as simple as that.

Whether it effects premium will depend on the insurer, I can only answer on behalf of Sky Insurance but if you were insured with any of our specialists, it it unlikely it would effect the premium you pay.

You might be unpleasantly surprised by that, there have been a few reports of people playing around on insurers systems adding mods etc , just to test out the cost implications, some of these people have had money taken from their accounts from these insurers as they believe the mods are on the car, shocking I know.

As mentioned though, comparison sites aren't usually great for modified cars, they are set up for standard UK car insurance

Is that even legal?! I havn't even got a 172 anyway :( so would be pretty silly of them to take more money from me lol, but thanks for the warning!

Well so far I've only spoken to sky, AF, brentachre and green light (who didn't get back to me)

Sky and brentachre were roughly in the same ballpark AF were way out and green light like I said didnt get back to me.

Was curious more than anything because green light didn't get back to me I wondered if the fact it's so highly modified that they simply didn't want my business.

Will probably end up going with sky unless I get a nicer person on the end of the phone at brentachre next time because they were the friendliest people I spoke to and were competitive.

Thats if I ever finish the fecking thing

Funny how it works. AF and Sky were similar for me but AF were marginally cheaper. The dude at Greenlight laughed when I told him the AF quote and said "We're not even gonna get close". Apparently my postcode was a big problem for them.

Most insurers are lying, robbing sods anyway. When my current insurer decided to inflate the compulsory excess for theft on my motorbike they told me that it was because of my postcode. A quick check on www.ukcrimestats.com showed a massive 4 reported vehicle crimes within a mile of my home over the preceding 12 months. Hardly a high-risk area.
