Deohaser with belt change or not?

  monaco 172
My cambelt is due in June and I'm going to do it myself to save a few quid. Tools are 150, everybody wants 300 labour to do it.

What's the average life or a dephaser pulley? Mine was changed at 93k 5 years ago on its last belt change.

The car is currently on 118k, so it's not really done many miles since the last change so I'm thinking of skipping that step to save a bit more cash.

The car is worth next to nothing anyway, 118k Monaco with nowhere near perfect bodywork and all the usual mods, so it's never going to be worth much more than a grand.

It’s more of a while you’re in there job as if it does go noisey you’ll be very unhappy if it’s a year after doing a belt.

I`m going to pass on my 35k mile, coming up for 5 year old dephaser and will go for the flywheel pulley instead, later this year.

I am sure I read on this forum that the early dephasers were a problem, but were modified and are now reliable.

If your water pump was not changed at 93k, do that instead.

My intention is to go to Diamond again, as the labour content is around £190, and the work is warrantied.

I also fairly sure @bloke does not charge £300.

I thought I'd read that somewhere about the dephasers. On the 93k service everything was done including the water pump, but as that's driven from the aux belt anyway I suppose that could also be done at a later date.

Are diamonds prices on his site not up to date? If he's only 190 labour I might aswel go there. But on his site it shows £450 for a cambelt and aux belt change on a 172.

Cambelt kit is 85, usually comes with free head plugs, aux kit can be had for 75 ish, and the crank pulley bolt is about a tenner so I work that out to be around 280 in labour.

Unless there's some parts I've not costed in?

I`ll PM you a copy of the Invoice which includes other bits & pieces done at the same time, but you can pick the bones out of it.

It looks that the labour factor has crept up by around £50 over 5 years, but that`s fair enough.

One thing you have to factor in, should you ever decide to sell, is that a Diamond invoice for belts, ticks a box.

Cheers Steve. PM received.

Yeh, having a receipt is a massive plus side, and the faslct changing the belt looks to be a complete pain in the arse but definitely doable.

Having the tools and know how to do it again though is a massive plus for if I was to ever own one again, or need to remove the cams etc..

Would hiring out the timing tools @ £20 for 7 days be a good deal?

It would yes, but I saw a thread a few weeks back where somebody was asking to do just that but he didn't get any offers.

There's some on Ebay for about £40 but I'm not sure how accurate they'd be.
