Dephaser Solenoid

  PH1 172 Sport
Think my dephaser is on the way out but I wanted to see if its the solenoid causing it.

What test is best to do to confirm its the dephaser and how do I go about cleaning the solenoid?

A hollow ticking noise from the left of the engine (I think). Haven't spent much time diagnosing it yet but Ive got a feeling thats what it is.

Your welcome to listen to it if your still at VW in Ciren.

How many miles is on the car?

I feel your pain :(

94k. Its not due the cambelt for ages either  I havn't had a chance to look at this tonight as I had to replace the rear disks!!

What should I be expecting to happen when I unplug the solenoid?

f0xy. The ticking noise i'm getting is nowhere near as loud or fast as that but it could still be the problem.

I still have this annoying tapping sound.

Its not the injectors as its a different noise. Does anyone know what unplugging the solenoid should achieve as I definitely want to confirm its the dephaser before getting the belt done 20k early.

  Dodgy one
I would like to know where this solonoid is so i can unplug it, Mine has since started doing this annoying tapping sound, and seeing 2 other sports drive by me as i was walking up town made me realise how bad mine is, It used to make a whiley / hiss (cracking description) like all the other sports ive heard do, But now its changed :(

It sounds nothing like that of Foxys which sounds rough at idle, but the revving noise is similar :dapprove:

Thursday she goes in for her belts at RS murray, It'd be nice to have some sort of idea so i can let them listen :)

Its by the oil filler cap. The thing is people have told me to unplug it to see if it makes a difference but nobody has explained what difference I should be looking for!!

horrible ticking will go away if its that!

Are you talking about the right solenoid as the thread was originally about the dephaser one but seems to have switched to the carbon canister one!!

I don't have a carbon canister so I know its not that thats making the noise

dont unplug the canister solonoid as it will throw the engine management light on

Aye it did that, I cleared it at work though, All my work colleages think its normal, It isnt lol.

I've unplugged the VVTI solenoid like the OP has and the ticking is still there up to about 4k revs warm, May add doesnt do it cold

Caister, If its your dephaser i'm pretty sure it will sound absolutly s**te, knocking and ticking and once the solenoids unplugged the noises will go away
