Depressing the clutch

Keep forgetting to read the manual and im infront of a PC so I thought id post this:

Are we suppossed to depress the clutch before starting the engine on the 182?

I do on any car..

I was told ages ago it puts less strain on it.. dunno if thats true or not, but Ive done it out of habit every time.

I park my car in gear so everytime I start up, I depress the clutch, again just out of habit.

erm only need to depress it if its in gear lol

im sure half of you still think your driving model ts as thats the last time most of your driving quirks were used

I tend to put my foot on the clutch out of habit, my driveway is a slight hill so its often in gear.

Chris, how come you never use the handbrake?

I know that some engines eg. the new vauxhall engines have trouble starting unless the clutch is depressed and it says to do so in the manual. Just wondered if anybody actually knew with the Renault engine?

I always do it, never leave my car in gear though (unless it is on a hill ofcourse)

Apparently mk1 MR2 manuals in America wont start unless the clutch is depressed. Theyre too dumb to check if its in gear or not lol.

cos i normally cain it home and the brakes get hot so don;t want f**ked rear discs. apparently the renault rear discs are sh*t and can warp easy.

I always leave the car in neutral but always depress the clutch just to make sure because at times Ive been wrong

Cup owners will know that if you put the handbrake on, they will have stuck by the next morning...
Same brakes on the 172, 172cup, 182 and 182 cup arent they?

I dont think the disks should wharp. Think this is an old mothers tale. They can get so hot that the pad can make a slight impression and thats the feeling you get when braking hard.

My mate used to get all 4 disks on his Cossie glowing orange then whack the hand brake on with no problems.

the rears hardly do anything, the fronts discs take the strain.

cup brakes are no different same as 172.

I always do it and my sis bought a new 3 series diesel and that doesnt let you start the engine until the clutch is pushed down.

It definately puts less strain on the engine.

I never depress the clutch when I start it, and havent done in any car for years. I always leave the handbrake on and have been caught out once or twice when Ive left it in gear by mistake .

I always do it out of habit and i always park it in 1st as i have to reverse my car onto my drive as its a steep slope into the garages.

my mums saab u have to put it in reverse to get the key out of the ignition! good practice i supose!

  Not a Clio

i read this thread yesterday and thought i would try it in the morning to see if it made any difference.

Normally my car is a pig to start (i did think i had it sorted but its come back) so i thought give it a go... depressed clutch, turned key and "vroooom" hasnt started that easily in ages.

Why is this the case?

Hang on lets think about this, the clutch consists of 2 sections a fly wheel and a friction plate, one side is connected to the engine and the other to the gearbox.

When you press the clutch down it seperates these 2 plates, when itsa in nutral you havent selected a gear do its turning bugger all apart from teh shaft in the gear box.

How can this put more strain on the engine?

But then saying that driving the enine at too low revs puts strain on it, also driving at high revs puts strain on it, but no one thinks twice about doing it, hell driving up a hill puts more strain on teh engine, so does driving with al your seats in, who is gonna go and strip their cars?

As for brakes warping, its a well known fact that if you put the handbrake on when the dics are hot that part of the disc gets hotter, more so than the rets of the disc, and when you heat metal up and it cools down it warps, end of

Have you noticed that when you have your car on axel stands and you start your engine the wheels will turn even if the car is in neutral, this shows that the engine and gearbox have a slight connection when the car is in neutral.

Its nothing to worry about if you dont start with the clutch down, its just that it reduces that slight load on the engine.

  ex Clio 172 owner :(

My second hand VTS had the multilok fitted so that the car has to be in neutral to lock it (supposed to be so that you lock it in first gear).

Yet still I start with depressed clutch through force of habit.

Sometimes when waiting in traffic or waiting to pick someone up, I still find myself with the car in 1st gear but with clutch depressed. Daft really; handbrake, neutral.
