diesel remapping question

  Roadster Coupe
I've got a mk4 golf gt tdi. I want to get remapped, is it true that remapping can improve mpg? I heard it does but i thought with the engine using more fuel that the mpg would decrease not increase.

Depends but yep often owners report better mpg after a while when they have stopped using all the power all the time its becaise you use the lower rpm bands more and the engines more efficient down there.

Yeah my MPGs gone up since a remap, same as a 1.9 TDI 90 Golf a mates got, MPG gone up.

All todo with being as smooth as possible I thought.

If you wanted a map just for extra mpg this is possible. However on a normal map you do tend to see improved MPG as the engine is far more efficient and thus does not have to work as hard to produce the same power.

Be careful with the torque. I have seen many people complaining that after a remap the clutch has not lasted long. Make sure wherever you go does not go mad and knows the limits. If you are unsure of what it's putting out you can use vag-com on most to measure in NM

yeh thats true. im getting celtic tuning to remap my car for me. heard there good. I need to find out somewhere what sort of bhp causes the car to chuck out black smoke so i can go just below that mark.

tbh there is no set "it will smoke at" but i'd go along the lines of +35/40hp and max 100nm

Its not an exact point depends how its mapped what fuel used and its a curve not a stright hp/ torque point.

A k+n panel filter greatly reduced my black smoke under hard acceleration

thanx, i was going to go along the lines of about 170 bhp. after a remap on a diesel is there alot more noticable smoke? i heard on some fourms that some cars chuck out loads of black smoke.

If mapped properly there will be no more than stock on this engine. Sometimes a touch if you are really pushing it but smoke on a diesel is not a good thing! And often they make less power when smoking bad due to high charge temps.

Depends on the car and if you want the dyno too but clio's are £295 and most VAG TDI stuff is £395

Cheers

Paul, how much do u charge for a rolling road session?? and which side of leeds are u based, near the football ground,or the other side near larkspeed??

re black smoke: generally when calibrating a diesel engine at full load for max cylinder pressure (torque), if black smake and particulate emmision is a problem, then more concentration should be spent on injection phasing and timing in order to vary ignition delay for one. this is where diesel calibration becomes far more complex than a petrol equivalent!

£50 for a dyno run mate. Will do a few to get a good averge. We are near the uni so inbetween larkspeed and leeds utd really.
