Wouldn't have bought it from Jessops mate, they're going out of business! I should be buying a d40 from warehouse express soon, you'd recomend it then? Just looking for a high quality camera with the ability to be used in fully manual mode for arty pics!

If you are beginner, go for 400D. If not, go for 40D.
If you always need to take quick shot with fast focusing, should use 40D, or Nikon D300 which will come soon.

Save money for lens, very important!!!

it will be fine on a 6x4 print but large prints you will be able to see it quite easily or on 100% crops etc

no but the higher the iso the less infomation is recorded due to noise reduction they make images soft

high iso is ok if you really dont care about the quality and its just getting the shot that matters paps etc
or if your just messing around gigs etc

but really there shouldnt be a need to shoot any higher than 200 just use a tripod and a faster lens

no worries buddy. i havnt been to the casino in ages! partly due to not being in work for near two months but thats a very different story.

Tbh mate that is rather a load of crap. I have personally printed upto 18x12 (I think it was that) at ISO400 and it came out completely crisp, and tbh I know I could have easily gone to ISO800 on my 400D and with Noise Ninja I could have also printed at that size no problem.

How the hell can you say "you need a tripod or faster lens if ur going above iso 200" ?!? What about sports photographers?????? Night games such as football and rugby have people all over the place shooting at ISO 1600 and 3200 (normally canons tbh) and frequently have their pics printed in magazines and newspapers.

Also weddings?? In a dark dingy church with a 2.8 lens you still need to be up at at least 800 to get decent shutter speeds, any slower and people blur because everyone is moving.

I mainly shoot outdoor sports such as golf and tennis and in bad weather I have gone to 800 many a time, but it has never troubled me nor has it compromised the quality of my shots.

Mike, How long have you been into photography and DSLR's for? You go on about and give advice as if you've been doing it your whole life, when I thought it was around 3-4 months?

I've had mine 6 months and only just starting to scratch the surface

It will be - The speed of the autofocus will be faster and more accurate with the 40D the motor in the lens is just one part of the chain. The AF on the 40D I tried locks onto moving targets faster than my 350D and friends 400D all using my 300mm F4L

right it all has to do with the ammount of light your shooting in

the lower the iso the longer the shutter needs to stay open agreed ?
and the higher the iso the shorter the length of time the shutter needs to be open ok ?

then you have your f stop the larger the number the longer the exposure needs to be and again the oposite is true of low f stops.

there is the rule 1/focal length regarding the minimum acceptable shutter speed for hand holding


so if you can only acheive 1/25 using a 50mm iso100 f2.8 as the amount of available light is too low you either increase the iso generating noise lower the fstop f1.8 lets in 4xthe light of 2.8 iirc or use a tripod to lessen the affects of camera shake .

when it comes to print you have some leway regarding noise news paper print you have leway due to it printing at about 100dpi mags about 200 photos print at about 300dpi

the higher the dpi the easier it is to see noise caused by high iso shooting as there is more infomation but also teh larger the image the more native infomation there needs to be in the first place

in some situations though noise is nice to have as it can add to certain styles like this one shot at iso1600 huge ammounts of noise really but because of the setting it adds to the image

Its not about the iso entirely. The size of the sensor is a major factor in the amount of noise you will get. Camera's with larger sensors can produce crisp images at 400+ to match those with 200iso setting and smaller sensor.

My boss has a Canon 5D and the crispness in the iso range is top dollar.
