DILEMA: Just bought another clio (aa breakdown cover)

  S1 16v 106 Rallye
Hi. I have a dilema that I need help with!

I've just bought a mk1 clio from north yorkshire in ripon. I live in Stafford, and total about 150 miles from the guy. The clio has a blown headgasket and therefor can't be driven.

Now, I could go get a courier to collect it and bring it back, but I wan't to check it over etc first before handing over the money, and he obviously wants cash on collection. Also, this method would set me back £120.

I have nobody local with a towbar and/or a trailor, so renting a trailer and finding someone with a towbar and then paying petrol would probably set me back the same.

I'm a student. I'm poor. I don't have that kinda money, but I do have AA breakdown cover. So here's the plan me and my mate had..

I drive up with my mate. He drops me off, we check over the car, and drive it about a mile down the road and pull over. We ring the AA and tell them i've broken down and I give them my membership details and explain the cars overheating qyuickly for some reason and that i'd just been up to see a mate in north yorkshire and was on my way home. I play the innocent card and claim I don't know a lot about cars and haven't had the car long and hope to christ they'll tow me 150 miles back to Stafford. Simple enough, although the policy and website state that on all breakdowns..

'Our aim is to fix your vehicle and get you on your way, but if we are unable to do this within a reasonable time we will provide a local tow to the nearest suitable repairer.'

and the latter i got from the AA upon activating my membership states:

'If following a breakdown at the roadside, we can't arrange a local repair within a reasonable time, we'll transport your car, together with you and up to seven passengers home or to any other single destination of your choice on the UK mainland or in Northern Island.'

Obviously they're not going to beable to fix a head gasket at roadside, but I don't want to pay a garage because the reason i bought the car with the head gasket blows is because I got it cheap knowing i can fix it for around £20 instead of paying a garage about £400. So what happens if they try and tow me to a local garage? Obviously they can't MAKE me, so would they leave me there or tow me home?

Has anyone else dealt with the AA or tried anything like this? I'm doing it this way becasue all I then have to do is pay my mate petrol to get me there and pay my own petrol to get back at a total of about £50 instead of about £120.

Cheers guys!

Yeah i'm considering it. Any idea how much it'd cost for a ticket from stafford to Ripon?

Yep. Drove about 2 miles from the guys house, pulled over with my mate behind me in a country lane layby, rang the AA, the guy was to us in about 30mins, did a few air pressure tests etc, asked a few questions, i pointed out the milky cap and suggested the head gasket, we kept checking the tempature etc, he made me drive down the road with him following to tell him what heppened to the tempature gage, i bluffed and pretended it went up, he strapped the car to the back of his van, i jumped into my mates car and we set off for home :D

This happend to me i was in my brothers van and the half shaft went. So i rang my other brother to get my AA card and ring them for me. He did and they brought us back from Hull to Blackburn. No questions asked.
