Dilemma...Should I?

  ph2 172
Well at present I own a 1.4 Dynamique and have done for the past 2 years or so. I have always wanted a 172 and today after a trip up to my local dealers saw one I liked and had a chat with the salesman. After all the usual banter we got down to figures.

The 172 is on a 51 plate and after trading in my dynamique the monthly payments would be the same as im paying now but over another 4 years, so in that respect I can afford it. Then I rang up the insurance and my policy will go up from £400 py to £900 py which is a bit of a kick in the mouth but I expected it anyway on a group 16 car. I havn't test drove the car yet as I know this will affect my decision and am trying to think rationally lol.

Basically im in two minds whether to wait just a little longer (maybe november when I get 3yrs no claims) or just bite the bullet and get my dream hot hatch now.

Help please! LOL
Oh im 23 by the way.

Whats sort of figures trade in etc are you looking at? And what about the 172 milage etc?
Insurance extra isn't that much though.

iam saving for about a year to get a 172 cup about 7k give my dynamique back in a years time, 7k over 3 years is 212 a month. and 900 quid on insurance 21 3 1/2 years driving.

Do some quotes and see how much is in it between having 2 years and 3 years ncd.... I'm reckoning theres not that much in it, and your'll go out and get it now!!

The figures don't sound to bad from what I've guessed as you cars true value and the 172's true value.
Doesn't seem to matter much birthdays and NCB your only looking at a few month having to pay a bit more.

Don't do it mate. In say 3 years time will you still want to be paying, I dunno, say 200quid a month for, by then an eight or nine year old car?? Keep your 1.4 until you've paid it off, what's that? Another two years?? Or at least until you are a grand past the negative equity on your present car, so then you'll have some form of deposit.

Alright m8,

I recently went from a 1.2 16v to a 182 Cup....no regrets. Despite the high costs I don't think there's any way I would consider going back to a "normal" car  I was in a similar position as I bought mine right before I turned 25. As it turned out being 24 didn't make any difference to my quote. You could always phone up and ask.

From my recent experience buying a 182 I would give this advice.....

Don't take the dealer finance, I got a personal loan from abey and saved £1100 over 3 years (lower rate + no setup fees). It takes 2 minutes to apply online. Never look at the monthly payments, look at how much it's costing you when all is said and done. I found the dealers would try a fudge the numbers to make things look affordable.

I would try and flog the car privately. My salesman said he would give me ~£2400 for my old car. He then went on to say he would flog it for £3600! A Clio shouldn't be difficult to sell.

Don't just take the offer your given, negotiate (especially on a clio). I walked out on the salesman as he wouldn't give me the deal I wanted, he was adiment that it wasn't possible. The phone was ringing when I got home.....surprise surprise it was the salesman saying he had changed his mind and he could do the deal. A car sitting around in their lot is costing them money in depreciation, they want it sold.

An offer is never "today only". I often got the "I can offer you this if you sign today" routine. There are loads of 172s/182s out there, so take your time and have a look around.

Hope that helps, good luck with the purchase. You won't regret it :approve:

Thanks for the replies appreciate it.

What are 172's like on petrol? also are servicing costs more on sport models?

These are things i'v got to bear in mind as I don't have a hell of alot of disposal income as it is.

36k service is around £360 at a Renault specialist, probably even more at a Renault Dealer, as the car is on 31k and it will be new to you, it won't take you long to get to 36k, this is worth bearing in mind. The service costs this much because the timing\aux belt needs replacing, also the Cam Belt service (72k) is around £700 as its around 6/7 hours work.

I wouldn't waste money.....just 'do your time' in lower powered cars until your older then you'll be able to run your car without being skint all the time:D

Altite guys

I phoned the dealer today and told him the insurance quotes were too high and to put the car back up for sale as im backing out.

Me and the misses had a chat and are going to have a look again towards the end of the year when hopfully we will be in a better position finacially.

It felt like the right thing to do but why now do I feel like crap lol. Suppose there will always be 172's available when I decide its the right time.

Thanks for the respnses
Oli
