Disk Defragmenter

Errrrrm....depends on the size of the disk etc, but generally nope....if I run a defrag on work machines I can usually complete it in around an hour on a 80gb HDD

shatter lol... shall i just cancel it and forget about it?

its on windows vista so it has two partions to defragment... but yeh it is only still an 80gb HDD so shouldn't be taking this long right?

my old XP took about 2/3 hours to do :(

ffs. can someone explain this please. i am the system admin etc but never heard of elevated mode :S

You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

insert xp cd rom, go to recovery mode, run chkdsk -r then restart and defrag

I would have posted something helpful but you already sorted his problem... and I was already in the thread so I thought it would be rude to leave without saying something ;)

its a *nix thing, he means change to the root (or any other user you want to) from any other account.

Aah I wasn't sure if he meant "su" or made a typo..

In answer to the question I've no idea.

My old computer was really screwed, the dic degfragment took 1.5 DAYS !!! I never bothered to do anything with it, kept on top of it after that though.

If it's using programs in the background it's constantly writing to HD and virtual, so that's probably why that took so long.

I'm wondering how long mine would take now... 4x 500Gb Hd's will be a doddle :S
