Do carwashes wreck your paintwork

Car  Mini Cooper S sport

I say yes, they definitely cause swirl marks, and Id NEVER take my car through one..but others beg to differ! *cough* Matt *cough* ;)

Yeah they should be called "Car Sandpaper washes" they are terrible things for paintwork.

Does someone on here then really use car washes on there clio?????

Simon.

yep i used to use it one a week for a while in winter... it took 7 hours of pc work to remove the swirl damage! lesson learned never again.

yeh.... used to have an old sh*tty escort which paint actually peeled of after using one of these. Apparently they are bringing a new type of car wash out that cleans your car spottless and is totally safe to use.

Shotgun not going first...

Does appeal though as sometimes i really cant be ar*ed washing the car.

I would never stick mine in one!!!

The very lazy option if you ask me and whoever does it deserves to get there car scatched up!!!:devilish:

Definetly ruin the paintwork, my mate put his passat through and it come out with a massive scratch on the wing!!

Ive never took my car through a carwash but I have washed it with washing up liquid before now!:o

Yep ruined my Naples Red RT many years ago... left swirl marks on the bonnet.

Give up now Matt, you aint gonna win this lol.

but they are fun.... :p

lol true... Ive taken other cars but never my 182 thru one!

There is a brushless car-wash near me that I havent tried ... but I think it would not only not scratch the paintwork but also not clean my car very well! lol :p

Id rather drive a dirty car!

The number one cause of swirled paintwork in the world. Currently trying to restore a friends car that has only ever been through car washes.

I used to take my company vectra through the £1.90 one round the corner, left the paintwork in a right state but I didnt really give a sh*t, lol. Wouldnt take the clio through!

Mine has never even seen a sponge, yet alone a car wash. Lambs wool mit and Zymol shampoo for me. I wouldnt even ever let the monkeys at the hand wash near my machine.

When I worked for BMW we had used to put people in cable tied to a chair, you didnt want to let the brushes touch you I can tell you. They are sharp bloody plastic.

Only really put the lease cars through it, private customer would go up the wall.

what i dont understand is how do they create swirl marks when the motion of the brush arm rotates towards the car? i thought ya only got swirl marks from say using a sponge and using circuler motion?
