Do i need sidelights to pass an MOT?

  ST
Stick them back in for the mot, tho i ran my 182 without sidelights too as they ruin the 'look' at night..xenons look so much better on their own..

No you don't! We do MOT's are there is no stipulation or requirements for sidelights. Never had any in mine.

If it has sidelights fitted to the car, you will need the bulbs surely? If you were to have the function on your car then this would mean they need to work, like foglamps, rear seatbelts etc, if you remove the unit, they cant test it, as such it doesnt fail.

incorrect.

on my old 106xsi, i had 1 smashed foglight and my reverse light never once worked and it got through 2 MOTs before i flogged it.

Takes what 5 mins to take out and back in, just bang them back in for the MOT, saves any hassle.

What! of course you do, they are required to work with the ignition off (part of the mot test) and with the engine running.

As philmots says ^

I never had reverse lights on my 1st car for 3 years as the switch went and dad didnt have time to do it. passed MOT every year without fail. Although i thought foglight lenses and headlamp lenses were compulsory to be intact??

reverse lights are not testable in any way shape or form.
front foglights are not testable in any way shape or form - the only time they become testable is if the lense is cracked and causing a sharp edge - the operation of the light isnt testable.
and headlamp lenses are only a fail when a crack/chip is causing either a sharp edge or a bad pattern from the light.

3rd brake lights are required to work if fitted - if not fitted or obviously disabled its not testable.

sidelights are required to work with ignition off (the reason fiats fail on igniton barels) and igniton on along with the no. plate lights.

(im doing the mot tester training atm - all fresh in my mind)

Never had a problem with mine. Like i said above it's at the disgression of the MOT tester.
