Do insurers check claims/convictions when setting up a policy?

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
Planning on going without a car for a few years, idea is to insure a £50 scrapper and leave it in the garden or a secure yard somewhere.

Just don't want to lose NCD after 2 years so what could I get away with not declaring.(again, this car won't even be started).

Do they have access to DVLA or anything to check what points you have?

I'd declare it as they'd check with your previous insurers about claims/ncb, they may also just check all your details are the same.

declare everything! As the car wont move, you could maybe get a stupidly low mileage, restricted mileage policy maybe?

My mate always claims he has 4yrs NCB and no convictions when he was actually formerly banned and has no NCB, but they have never found out or checked...

I personally wouldnt though.

How do you know they haven't checked? It wouldn't surprise me if they knew. Why would they come back and say they're not insuring you when it's better for them to take your money and then when you crash make your cover void as you lied when you took out the cover?

i'd assume if he forged a NCB proof document then he'd get away easy. But when it does come to claim time insurers will look for any way out they can

Indeed, this is what I'm getting at, I don't want to insure a car for £500 with everything declared when it's possible to have it for £200 (theoretical prices).

It obviously won't be claimed on as the car probably won't even start.

Does that mean the actual insurer he's with would send him an NCD certificate for 5 years once his policy is complete?...

the car will still need to be mot'd, and taxed, as well as insured, so you will be no doubt better off not bothering and just paying a premium when you want to drive again. if you dont tell them about convictions tec, ie lie and something does happen, then insurance is VOID.

To be honest it depends how long you plan on going without a car for. NCD is only void if it isnt used for 2 years, so you can go without a car for that long without losing it.

Do you actually know anything about it mate?

You need insurance and MOT to tax a car (i.e. have it on the road). Don't need the latter 2 to get an insurance policy though.

And again, insurance is technically void anyway, and how can anything happen if the car is locked away (or doesn't even exist). Just looking for a cheap way to get NCD while I'm without a car so that when I come back I have a bit more discount.

lol very very good idea though, although i couldnt be bothered with the hassal of having no car buy paying for insurance lol

I suppose it would work, dnt c why not! an dnt bother declaring it cause at the end of the day if they do void ur insurance then it dnt matter anwyay cause u wnt be driving the car!.

Im not sure of any more details but the companies havent said anything to him, although he hasnt made a claim.

Seems unlikely as insurance companies ask you to provide proof of ncb when you take a policy out..

some companies check at inception, some check when something happens.
usually depends if u have other policies with them etc
